One of the first steps in the effort to expand Packard Children's Hospital and rebuild Stanford Hospital includes utility work and surface improvements. The Welch Road Utility Project includes: replacing utility services and information technology infrastructure along Welch and Quarry Roads to serve the new hospital facilities once they are built; the widening of Welch Road; replacement of sidewalks, curbs and gutters; planting of new street trees and installation of planted medians and street lighting.

Note: Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.

This week's activities:

What to expect this weekend (5/5-5/6)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7am - 3:30 pm; night work on 5/6 beginning at 8 pm until 5 am on Monday 5/7.

Hot water line work behind the K-Rail in Quarry will continue on Saturday, 5/5. Pre-utility switchover work will be performed by the City of Palo Alto on Saturday in front of 777 Welch. Possible chilled water line work will occur in front of 801 Welch. Access in and out of the driveway entrance will be maintained at all times.

Work will also occur to grind up the remaining asphalt in the parking lot behind Blake Wilbur Clinics over the weekend. This work will cause some noise and vibration. Dirt will be off-hauled from the site.

On Sunday, 5/6, water utility work will continue near the AMC in Blake Wilbur Drive. This work will be performed at night and will require some traffic changes between 8 pm-5 am. Some noise is anticipated from saw-cutting, jack hammering and backhoe equipment. The Marguerite shuttle will maintain service to Blake Wilbur Drive. This work is anticipated to be completed in the next couple of weeks.

Weekday work (5/7-5/11)

Hours of Construction Activity: 7am - 3:30 pm

Welch Rd is now a one-lane, one-way road going West from Quarry to Pasteur Drive. This change will be in effect for two years. We thank you for your patience regarding this significant change and ask that you please adjust your driving route accordingly. South Pasteur Drive is now a two-way two-lane road. North Pasteur Drive is closed between Blake Wilbur Drive and Sand Hill Road.

K-Rail will remain in place on the inboard side of Quarry Rd (between Welch and continuing up to the Quarry Extension near the turn to the Emergency Department) in order to facilitate ongoing utility work. This reduces Quarry to a two lane, two direction road during this time. Access will be maintained to the Emergency Department at all times.

On Tuesday, 5/8, the gas at 801 Welch Road will be shut off for two hours during the morning hours. This shut off has been coordinated directly with the property.

Work will continue to install a new hot water line on Quarry Road. A portion of this work will continue to take place outside of the K-Rail in the quarry Extension. Access to the Emergency Department will be maintained at all times.

Work on the chilled water line will continue on Welch Rd, moving south. The existing gas main will be exposed in front of 777 Welch next week. Access in and out of 777 Welch will be maintained at all times. Flaggers will be onsite to assist with traffic flow if needed.

Please be cautious of construction trucks entering the road. Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.
