Welch Road Utility Project

August 2011-September 2013

One of the first steps in the effort to expand Packard Children's Hospital and rebuild Stanford Hospital includes utility work and surface improvements. The Welch Road Utility Project includes: replacing utility services and information technology infrastructure along Welch and Quarry Roads to serve the new hospital facilities once they are built; the widening of Welch Road; replacement of sidewalks, curbs and gutters; planting of new street trees and installation of planted medians and street lighting.

Note: Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.

What to expect this weekend (6/2-6/3)
Hours of Construction Activity: 7am - 3:30 pm; Nighttime work in Blake Wilbur Drive will occur Sunday, 6/3 at 8 pm until Monday, 6/4 at 5 am.

Hot water line work will continue on Quarry Rd; chilled water line work will continue on Welch Rd.

The City of Palo Alto will be conducting an electric power shut down at 1101 Welch Rd on Saturday, 6/2. This will be an all-day event and is being coordinated directly with the property. Any questions can be directed to Greg Schulz, City of Palo Alto, Electric Operations, (650) 496-6933.

Temporary power poles will be installed from 800-700 Welch Rd in order to support future utility switchovers.

Water utility work will continue near the AMC in Blake Wilbur Drive. This work will be performed at night and will require some traffic changes between 8 pm-5 am. Some noise is anticipated from saw-cutting, jack hammering and backhoe equipment. The Marguerite shuttle will maintain service to Blake Wilbur Drive. This work is anticipated to be completed in the next week.

Weekday work (6/4-6/8)
Hours of Construction Activity: 7am - 5:30 pm

Welch Rd is now a one-lane, one-way road going West from Quarry to Pasteur Drive. This change will be in effect for two years. We thank you for your patience regarding this significant change and ask that you please adjust your driving route accordingly. South Pasteur Drive is now a two-way two-lane road. North Pasteur Drive is closed between Blake Wilbur Drive and Sand Hill Road.

K-Rail will remain in place on the inboard side of Quarry Rd (between Welch and continuing up to the Quarry Extension near the turn to the Emergency Department) in order to facilitate ongoing utility work. This reduces Quarry to a two lane, two direction road during this time. Access will be maintained to the Emergency Department at all times.

Work will continue to install a new hot water line on Quarry Road. A portion of this work will continue to take place outside of the K-Rail in the Quarry Extension. Access to the Emergency Department will be maintained at all times.

Work on the chilled water line will continue on Welch Rd, moving south.

The City of Palo Alto will be performing a power switchover at 900 Welch on Wednesday, 6/6. This event is being coordinated directly by the City with the property.

Temporary power poles will continue to be installed from 700-800 Welch Rd in order to support future utility switchovers.

Please be cautious of construction trucks entering the road. Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.
