10-Day Look Ahead: Renewal Project Construction Activities


The Stanford University Medical Center Renewal Project, which will expand Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, rebuild Stanford Hospital, modernize Hoover Pavilion, and replace School of Medicine laboratories, is underway.

 

Below is a summary of the Renewal Project's anticipated construction activities, hours of activity, and any affected lane or road closures over the next 10 days. Welch Road Utility Project

August 2011-September 2013 

 

One of the first steps in the effort to expand Packard Children's Hospital and rebuild Stanford Hospital includes utility work and surface improvements. The Welch Road Utility Project includes: replacing utility services and information technology infrastructure along Welch and Quarry Roads to serve the new hospital facilities once they are built; the widening of Welch Road; replacement of sidewalks, curbs and gutters; planting of new street trees and installation of planted medians and street lighting. 


Note: Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.


This week's activities:


Weekend work (9/16-9/18): day shift: 7 am- 4 pm; night work: 8 pm-5 am

Continued street tree removal planned 9/17 and night utility work planned along Quarry and Welch Rd. This work will require traffic control measures. Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.


Weekday work (9/19-9/23): 7 am-4 pm

Planned activities include continued survey and staking work along Quarry and Welch Roads as well as tree removal on-site. New driveways are currently being constructed via Vineyard into the 730 and 750/770 Welch properties. New driveway construction will also continue to occur at Blake Wilbur Drive and the backside of 1101 Welch Rd for new valet access. Trees will also be removed and relocated to the Stanford University campus from the 1101 Welch Rd. site. (Please note: no traffic or parking changes will occur at this time.) 

 

Night work: (9/19-9/23): 8 pm-5 am

Preparatory utility-related work will continue on Welch Rd and Quarry Rd. This work will require some traffic control measures. Please be cautious of steel plates in the street during this time. Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.


What to expect next weekend (9/23-9/25): 7 am-4 pm

Street tree removal planned on Welch Rd 9/24 and utility work planned along Quarry Rd and Welch Rd. This work will require traffic control measures. Please be cautious of steel plates in the street during this time. Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times. 

 

Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Expansion (Make-Ready Site)

August 2011-October 2012

  

The Packard Children's Hospital expansion site prep (known as the 'Make-Ready' site) includes the demolition of 701 & 703 Welch and the construction of a shoring wall and utility tunnel in preparation for the Packard Children's expansion.


This week's activities:


Weekend work (9/16-9/18): day shift: 7 am- 4 pm; night work: 8 pm-5 am

Preparatory utility-related work will continue on Quarry Rd in the evenings.  Traffic control measures will be in place. Please be cautious of trench plates in road. Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.


Weekday work (9/19-9/23): 7 am-4 pm

Abatement preparation at 703 Welch, including the covering of windows and the arcade, will continue. Construction of a new sidewalk on the east side of the Falk building continues with asphalt now expected mid-week. No equipment causing vibration will be used. Once completed, Falk Lot bicycle racks and lockers will be relocated on the property. The racks and lockers will be posted prior to moving.  Work continues on sidewalk installation along the north and east side of Packard Hospital, near the Bass Center. Concrete pour scheduled for 9/20. Tree removal and relocation to occur.
 

Night work (9/19-9/23): 8 pm-5 am

Preparatory utility-related work will continue on Quarry Rd. Traffic control measures will be in place. Please be cautious of trench plates in the road. Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.

 

What to expect next weekend (9/23-9/25)

Pending permits, abatement will occur at 703 Welch in addition to abatement prep work at 701 Welch.

 

Some tree relocation work is scheduled to occur on the site; preparatory utility-related work will occur on Quarry Rd in the evenings.  Traffic control measures will be in place. Please be cautious of steel plates in road. Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.

 

 

Hoover Pavilion Modernization 

August 2011-July 2013

 

Construction is underway to modernize and restore Hoover Pavilion, the original Palo Alto Hospital, in order to accommodate modern medicine and create a cohesive expansion to the Medical Center campus.

 

This week's activities:

 

Weekend work (9/16-9/18):

No work planned.

 

Weekday work (9/19-9/23): 7 am-4 pm

Hard demolition activities will begin this week with the removal of the nurses' cottage bridge, the exterior stair on the south wing of the Pavilion and the 3rd floor topping slab.  This effort includes loud, noise-producing activities. A large forklift will be placed in the courtyard to facilitate this demolition.

 

Window removal will begin on the 5th floor once abatement clearance is secured. The City of Palo Alto Utilities will be power washing the substation on Quarry Rd. and Sweet Olive Way as part of their routine maintenance.

 

Night work: (9/19-9/23): 8 pm-5 am

No work planned.

 

What to expect next weekend (9/23-9/25): 7 am-4 pm

Hazmat abatement of piping along the building exterior tentatively scheduled.
