10-Day Look Ahead: Renewal Project Construction Activities


The Stanford University Medical Center Renewal Project, which will expand Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, rebuild Stanford Hospital, modernize Hoover Pavilion, and replace School of Medicine laboratories, is underway.

 

Below is a summary of the Renewal Project's anticipated construction activities, hours of activity, and any affected lane or road closures over the next 10 days. Welch Road Utility Project

August 2011-September 2013 

 

One of the first steps in the effort to expand Packard Children's Hospital and rebuild Stanford Hospital includes utility work and surface improvements. The Welch Road Utility Project includes: replacing utility services and information technology infrastructure along Welch and Quarry Roads to serve the new hospital facilities once they are built; the widening of Welch Road; replacement of sidewalks, curbs and gutters; planting of new street trees and installation of planted medians and street lighting.

 

Note: Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.

 

This week's activities:

 

Weekend work (9/23-9/25): day shift: 7 am- 4 pm; night work: 8 pm-5 am

Continued street tree removal planned 9/24 and night utility work planned along Quarry and Welch Rd. This work will require traffic control measures. Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.

 

Weekday work (9/26-9/30): 7 am-4 pm

Planned activities include continued survey and staking work along Quarry and Welch Roads as well as tree removal on-site. New driveways are currently being constructed via Vineyard into the 730 and 750/770 Welch properties. The new Vineyard driveways are scheduled to open on 9/26. Please note that access to these properties will be maintained on Welch Rd until 10/3.

 

New driveway construction will also continue to occur at Blake Wilbur Drive and the backside of 1101 Welch Rd for new valet access. The valet lot will relocate to the back of 1101 Welch on 9/26. This change will not impact the public.

 

Trees will also continue to be removed and relocated to the Stanford University campus from the 1101 Welch Rd. site.

 

Night work: (9/26-9/30): 8 pm-5 am

Preparatory utility-related work will continue on Welch Rd and Quarry Rd. This work will require some traffic control measures. Please be cautious of steel plates in the street during this time. Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.

 

What to expect next weekend (9/30-10/2): 7 am-4 pm

Street tree removal planned on Welch Rd 10/1 and utility work planned along Quarry Rd and Welch Rd. This work will require traffic control measures. Please be cautious of steel plates in the street during this time. Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.

 

Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Expansion (Make-Ready Site)

August 2011-October 2012

  

The Packard Children's Hospital expansion site prep (known as the 'Make-Ready' site) includes the demolition of 701 & 703 Welch and the construction of a shoring wall and utility tunnel in preparation for the Packard Children's expansion.

 

This week's activities:

 

Weekend work (9/23-9/25): day shift: 7 am- 4 pm; night work: 8 pm-5 am

Preparatory utility-related work will continue on Quarry Rd in the evenings. Traffic control measures will be in place. Please be cautious of trench plates in road. Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.

 

Weekday work (9/26-9/30): 7 am-4 pm

Abatement will continue at 703 and 701 Welch in preparation for building demolition next month. Construction of a new sidewalk on the east side of the Falk building continues with asphalt now expected mid-week. No equipment causing vibration will be used. Once completed, Falk Lot bicycle racks and lockers will be relocated on the property, most likely at the end of the month. The racks and lockers will be posted prior to moving.  The sidewalk installation along the north and east side of Packard Hospital, near the Bass Center, is complete.

 

Permits pending, work will begin to relocate the chilled water line adjacent to 703 Welch and Packard Children's Hospital. This work includes some excavation work to install new water lines and may include noise-producing activities.

 

On 9/28, a crane will arrive at the Make Ready site to facilitate the relocation of trees.

 

Night work (9/19-9/30): 8 pm-5 am

Preparatory utility-related work will continue on Quarry Rd. Traffic control measures will be in place. Electrical work is scheduled to begin on Quarry beginning 9/26. This work includes digging a trench across Quarry Rd during night shifts only. Please be cautious of trench plates in the road. Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times. Some tree relocation work is scheduled to occur on the Make Ready site next week in the evening hours. This work may cause some noise and vibration.

 

What to expect next weekend (9/30-10/2)

Abatement work will continue at 703 and 701 Welch Rd.

Hoover Pavilion Modernization 

August 2011-July 2013

 

Construction is underway to modernize and restore Hoover Pavilion, the original Palo Alto Hospital, in order to accommodate modern medicine and create a cohesive expansion to the Medical Center campus.

 

This week's activities:

 

Weekend work (9/23-9/25):

Hazmat abatement of piping along the building exterior and on the 3rd floor and 5th floor roofs is scheduled for this weekend.

 

Weekday work (9/26-9/30): 7 am-4 pm

Hard demolition activities will continue with the removal of the exterior stair on the south wing of the Pavilion and the 3rd floor topping slab.  This effort includes loud, noise-producing activities. Window removal will continue on the 5th floor.

 

Work to install a temporary road will also begin off of Palo Road. This temporary road will provide access to the tree farm, the location where protected trees will be stored during Renewal Project construction. Fencing will be installed around the tree farm.

 

Night work: (9/26-9/30): 8 pm-5 am

No work planned.
