10-Day Look Ahead: Renewal Project Construction Activities


The Stanford University Medical Center Renewal Project, which will expand Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, rebuild Stanford Hospital, modernize Hoover Pavilion, and replace School of Medicine laboratories, is underway.

 

Below is a summary of the Renewal Project's anticipated construction activities, hours of activity, and any affected lane or road closures over the next 10 days. Welch Road Utility Project

August 2011-September 2013 

 

One of the first steps in the effort to expand Packard Children's Hospital and rebuild Stanford Hospital includes utility work and surface improvements. The Welch Road Utility Project includes: replacing utility services and information technology infrastructure along Welch and Quarry Roads to serve the new hospital facilities once they are built; the widening of Welch Road; replacement of sidewalks, curbs and gutters; planting of new street trees and installation of planted medians and street lighting.

 

Note: Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.

 

This week's activities:

 

Weekend work (9/30-10/2): day shift: 7 am- 4 pm; night work: 8 pm-5 am

Continued street tree removal planned 10/1 and night utility work planned along Quarry and Welch Rd. This work will require traffic control measures. Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.

 

Weekday work (10/3-10/7): 7 am-4 pm

Planned activities include continued survey and staking work along Quarry and Welch Roads as well as tree removal on-site. New driveways were constructed via Vineyard into the 730 and 750/770 Welch properties. These new driveways are now open. Please note that access to these properties will close on Welch Rd on Monday, 10/3. Access to 730 and 750/770 Welch will be available via Vineyard only. The exit to 770 Welch will be maintained.

 

New driveway construction is complete at Blake Wilbur Drive and the backside of 1101 Welch Rd and valet access has been relocated. This change does not impact the public.

  

Night work: (10/3-10/7): 8 pm-5 am

Preparatory utility-related work will continue on Welch Rd and Quarry Rd. This work will require some traffic control measures. Please be cautious of steel plates in the street during this time. Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.

 

 

What to expect next weekend (10/7-10/9): 7 am-4 pm

Street tree removal planned on Welch Rd 10/6 and utility work planned along Quarry Rd and Welch Rd. This work will require traffic control measures. Please be cautious of steel plates in the street during this time. Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.

 

Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Expansion (Make-Ready Site)

August 2011-October 2012

 

The Packard Children's Hospital expansion site prep (known as the 'Make-Ready' site) includes the demolition of 701 & 703 Welch and the construction of a shoring wall and utility tunnel in preparation for the Packard Children's expansion.


This week's activities:


Weekend work (9/30-10/2): day shift: 7 am- 4 pm; night work: 7 pm-5 am

Some tree relocation work is scheduled to occur on the Make Ready site. This work may cause some noise and vibration. Redwood tree harvesting for re-purposing will begin on Friday 9/30.  Trees to be harvested are located along Quarry Road at the Falk parking lot and at the corner of Welch and Quarry (near 701 Welch). The transport of trees from the Make Ready site to the Hoover tree storage yard is scheduled to begin tonight at 7 pm.


Preparatory utility-related work will continue on Quarry Rd in the evenings.  Traffic control measures will be in place. Please be cautious of trench plates in road. Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times. Abatement work of 703 Welch will continue on Saturday 10/1.


Weekday work (10/3-10/7): 7 am-4 pm

Abatement will continue at 703 and 701 Welch in preparation for building demolition next month. Construction of a new sidewalk on the east side of the Falk building is complete. As noticed, the Falk Lot bicycle racks and lockers will be relocated on the property on Monday 10/3. The lockers will be out of service for the day but will be back in operation on 10/4. All bikes must be removed from the lockers prior to 10/3.

 

The new sidewalk along the north and east side of Packard Hospital, near the Bass Center, will open on 10/3.  The new sidewalk provides egress from the second floor of Packard Children's for the CVICU.

Work will continue to relocate the chilled water line adjacent to 703 Welch and Packard Children's Hospital. This work includes some excavation work to install new water lines and may include noise-producing activities.

 

Night work (10/3-10/7): 8 pm-5 am

Electrical work is scheduled to continue on Quarry Rd. This work includes digging a trench across Quarry Rd during night shifts only. Preparatory utility-related work will continue on Quarry Rd. Traffic control measures will be in place. Please be cautious of trench plates in the road. Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times. Some tree relocation work is scheduled to occur on the Make Ready site next week in the evening hours. This work may cause some noise and vibration

What to expect next weekend (10/7-10/9)

Abatement work will continue at 703 and 701 Welch Rd in anticipation of beginning demolition of 703 Welch on 10/10.

Hoover Pavilion Modernization 

August 2011-July 2013

 

Construction is underway to modernize and restore Hoover Pavilion, the original Palo Alto Hospital, in order to accommodate modern medicine and create a cohesive expansion to the Medical Center campus.

 

This week's activities:

 

Weekend work (9/30-10/2):

Abatement work will occur in the shed buildings and in the piping along the exterior of the building over the weekend. Power will be shut down during this time so that electricians can remove existing electrical panels.

 

Weekday work (10/3-10/7): 7 am-4 pm

Scaffold erection will begin on Monday 10/3. This work will begin on the Quarry Road side of the site and will continue around the remainder of the Pavilion site.

 

Hard demolition activities will continue with the removal of the 3rd and 5th floor topping slab.  This effort includes loud, noise-producing activities. Window removal will continue later in the week on the 4th floor.

 

Night work: (10/3-10/7): 8 pm-5 am

No work planned.
