10-Day Look Ahead: Renewal Project Construction Activities


The Stanford University Medical Center Renewal Project, which will expand Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, rebuild Stanford Hospital, modernize Hoover Pavilion, and replace School of Medicine laboratories, is underway.

 

Below is a summary of the Renewal Project's anticipated construction activities, hours of activity, and any affected lane or road closures over the next 10 days. Welch Road Utility Project

August 2011-September 2013 


One of the first steps in the effort to expand Packard Children's Hospital and rebuild Stanford Hospital includes utility work and surface improvements. The Welch Road Utility Project includes: replacing utility services and information technology infrastructure along Welch and Quarry Roads to serve the new hospital facilities once they are built; the widening of Welch Road; replacement of sidewalks, curbs and gutters; planting of new street trees and installation of planted medians and street lighting. 


Note: Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.

 

This week's activities:


Weekend work (9/9-9/11): day shift: 7 am- 4 pm; night work: 8 pm-5 am


Street tree removal planned 9/10 and night utility work planned along Quarry and Welch Rd. This work will require traffic control measures. Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.


Weekday work (9/12-9/16): 7 am-4 pm


Planned activities include continued survey and staking work along Quarry and Welch Roads as well as tree preparation and pruning for boxing and storage. New driveways will be constructed via Vineyard into the 730 and 750/770 Welch properties. New driveway construction will occur at Blake Wilbur Drive and the backside of 1101 Welch Rd for new valet access. (Please note: no traffic or parking changes will occur at this time.) 


Night work: (9/12-9/16): 8 pm-5 am


Preparatory utility-related work will continue on Welch Rd and Quarry Rd. This work will require some traffic control measures. Please be cautious of steel plates in the street during this time. Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.


What to expect next weekend (9/16-9/18): 7 am-4 pm


Street tree removal planned on Welch Rd 9/17 and utility work planned along Quarry Rd and Welch Rd. This work will require traffic control measures. Please be cautious of steel plates in the street during this time. Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.

 

Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Expansion (Make-Ready Site)

August 2011-October 2012

  

The Packard Children's Hospital expansion site prep (known as the 'Make-Ready' site) includes the demolition of 701 & 703 Welch and the construction of a shoring wall and utility tunnel in preparation for the Packard Children's expansion.

 

This week's activities:


Weekend work (9/9-9/11): day shift: 7 am- 4 pm; night work: 8 pm-5 am


Preparatory utility-related work will continue on Quarry Rd in the evenings.  Traffic control measures will be in place. Please be cautious of trench plates in road. Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.


Weekday work (9/12-9/16): 7 am-4 pm


Permits pending, abatement preparation, including the covering of windows and the arcade, will occur at 703 Welch Rd. Preparatory work will occur to build a new sidewalk in front of the Falk Building. There is no anticipated impact to neighboring buildings during this time. The Falk lot bicycle racks will likely be moved after this sidewalk work is completed which could be as early as 9/21. Signs will be posted prior to the relocation of the Falk bicycle racks and lockers.


Tree preparation, boxing and storage will continue on site along with the relocation of some trees to the Stanford University campus.


Night work (9/12-9/16): 8 pm-5 am


Preparatory utility-related work will continue on Quarry Rd. Traffic control measures will be in place. Please be cautious of trench plates in the road. Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times.


What to expect next weekend (9/16-9/18)


Pending permits, abatement will occur at 703 Welch in addition to abatement prep work at 701 Welch.


Some tree relocation work is scheduled to occur on the Make Ready site; preparatory utility-related work will occur on Quarry Rd in the evenings.  Traffic control measures will be in place. Please be cautious of steel plates in road. Access to the Emergency Room will be maintained at all times. 

 

Hoover Pavilion Modernization 

August 2011-July 2013

 

Construction is underway to modernize and restore Hoover Pavilion, the original Palo Alto Hospital, in order to accommodate modern medicine and create a cohesive expansion to the Medical Center campus.

 

This week's activities:


Weekend work (9/9-9/11):


No work planned.


Weekday work (9/12-9/16): 7 am-4 pm


Soft demolition, site and abatement preparation is on-going. Abatement is scheduled to occur during the week. Tree removal around the Pavilion in preparation for scaffolding is complete.  Pruning, boxing and storage of trees around the Pavilion site is complete and will not resume again until relocation of the trees is scheduled. 


Night work: (9/12-9/16): 8 pm-5 am


No work planned.
