SUS Presents at NYSACRA Conference During Autism Awareness Month

Last week, behavior analysts from SUS presented at the New York State Association of Community and Residential Agencies (NYSACRA) 2014 Annual Conference. Their two presentations discussed the process, benefits and challenges of helping individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities build strong communications skills; and how the principles and standards of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) are helping to meet the needs of the industry as it transitions to a managed care model. The presentations were well attended by audiences of professionals from other nonprofit service provider agencies.

Jerald Jenkins, peer specialist at SUS' Brooklyn Crisis Respite Center, was recently featured in Behavioral Health News, a leading industry publication. The summer issue focuses on the vital role of housing and employment in the recovery process for individuals with behavioral health challenges. In the story bylined by Jenkins, he tells his story of battling with mental health, homelessness and substance abuse and how the housing and employment support provided at SUS have helped him to pursue his goals and the opportunity to serve others. Read More (page 28)

Last weekend, to kick off Earth Day, volunteers from the community and individuals served by SUS who also work as SUS urban farmers donated their time at our Chester residence in Brooklyn. Together they built an attractive arbor, planted new seeds, and prepared 11 raised beds for the 2014 harvest season. (View photos) With the help of these volunteers and those who donated their time over the winter, SUS has gotten an early start to the growing season. With their continued support, we look forward to making 2014 the most productive year yet for both SUS' urban farms and Volunteer Program. Read More
At SUSwe recognize that having a job creates opportunities to build the work and social associations that help people to achieve true integration in their communities. SUS used April, National Autism Awareness Month, to promote an awareness among employers that individuals with Autism, despite some challenges, do make outstanding employees. Beyond April, we hope that employers and others in the community advocate for individuals with Autism. Read More
