Communities in Harvest is back for 2014!

We are pleased to announce another season of Saanich's Communities In Harvest workshops for 2014! We had a very positive response in our first year and we are pleased to offer
new and exciting food growing courses to you and your families.

This year the program will have five new workshops available, all at a discounted rate for Saanich residents.

Vancouver Island Green Business Certification is Here!
Is your local business up for the challenge? 

Saanich is proud to support local businesses reach their sustainability goals.

The Synergy Sustainability Institute has launched a local certification that will help catalyze the green economy on Vancouver Island by providing businesses and consumers with a credible certification that promotes sustainability. Saanich is committed to supporting the the Vancouver Island Green Business Certification (VIGBC) which recognizes businesses taking action to reduce waste, monitor paper usage, promote clean water, energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Look for the Silver, Gold and Green certification badges at retail shops, restaurants, cafes and office based businesses.

"Changing Gears 2014" March 22nd at Pearkes Recreation Center
Sustainable Transportation Event 

The BC Sustainable Energy Association is proud to announce their commitment to Sustainable Transportation and reducing emissions from transportation in our community. 

On Saturday, March 22nd  be sure to stop on by Saanich's Pearkes Recreation Center 
for the Changing Gears 2014 event to learn more about "Active Transportation" methods in the region and other ways to be active while getting to where you need to be.  

 

Saanich Reduces Fleet Fuel Consumption by 200,000 Litres

700 Tonnes of Greenhouse Gas Reduction from Saanich Carbon Footprint

 

Transitioning to high efficiency diesel, hybrid and electric vehicles, low-emission transport options has helped reduce Saanich's total fuel emissions by an amazing 25% since 2007. This includes Saanich's new fuel efficient waste collection trucks!

Sustainable Purchasing Program Now on Trial in Saanich
Buying green can make a big impact in the community
 
Saanich is committed to promoting Sustainability with our suppliers. We've introduced the trial phase of a new Sustainable purchasing program for 2014. 

An important announcement on introducing the first of two policy elements part of the Sustainable Purchasing program can be found on our bidding information page. The supplier Social & Environmental declaration encourages the formation of sustainable businesses locally.


Stay tuned for more information on how the second policy element being introduced as part of the sustainable purchasing guidelines guiding Saanich's day-to-day business operations.
