City of Cleveland Safety Fair Featured at Friday's Asphalt Cinema

Explore the attractions starting this Friday, August 15, at 6:30 p.m. at a City of Cleveland Safety Fair being held in conjunction with Asphalt Cinema at Impett Park, 3207 West 153rd Street.

Touch and tour safety equipment such as a fire truck, smoke house, bomb squad unit, and more. If available, expect to see members of the canine unit and at least one mounted police unit. In addition, our sponsor Fairview Hospital will offer children's bike helmets and bike reflectors while supplies last.

If you have children 6 years old or younger, visit the table of the West Park Early Childhood PTA for information about becoming a member of their support network. Take part in their free raffle for a chance to win a family membership to Great Lakes Science Center.  

Enjoy games with prizes, sponsored by local business owners, or create a self-portrait or a likeness from a character featured in our movie,
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, 2. The Pork Chop Speedway returns! Concessions by Four Corners Baseball stay open throughout the evening. The artistic portion of the event is supported in part by the residents of Cuyahoga County through a public grant from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture.

Romanian Festival Weekend Ahead

St. Mary Romanian Orthodox Cathedral will host its 9th Annual Romanian Festival this weekend on the cultural grounds at 3256 Warren Road, starting Friday at 4:30 p.m. and ending Sunday at 10 p.m. Admission and parking are free of charge. Click here for the flyer with times and performances.

Visitors have come to expect great food, a neighborhood ambiance, and an opportunity to get acquainted with the ancient and unique Romanian culture and heritage. Romanian music will fill the air with Chicago's Rhapsody Orchestra and the Doina dance troupe from Canton. Offerings include a variety of Romanian cuisine items, religious artifacts, and reasonably-priced art objects and jewelry. Kamm's Corners Development Corporation (KCDC) and Bellaire-Puritas Development Corporation (BPDC) serve the western and eastern areas of the West Park neighborhood respectively. Recent changes to ward boundaries have expanded KCDC's service areas into those formerly served by BPDC, and BPDC has expanded its service area further east, introducing new and different challenges to both organizations. Greek Festival Returns Labor Day Weekend

Take a trip to Greece without leaving West Park Labor Day Weekend by visiting the 4th Annual Cretan Center's Greek Festival, beginning Friday, August 30. West 168th Street from Lorain Avenue south to Albers Avenue will be closed for festival use. Parking will be available in the adjoining municipal lot. Live music, Greek dancers in traditional folk costumes, and plenty of food will highlight the festival as it runs Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and on Monday, September 1, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Admission is free.

Greek food may be purchased inside the Cretan Center, which is air conditioned, or from the grill outside. All food is provided exclusively by City Club Catering, which operates inside the Cretan Center. Returning this year is the traditional fire roasted lamb on the spit -- tender and juicy! 10th Annual Cleveland Senior Walk Offers Free Fun

Wear comfortable shoes and join in a free one or two-mile fun walk taking place on Thursday, September 11, on Mall C downtown, sponsored by the City of Cleveland Department of Aging. Free T-shirts will be provided to the first 1,000 registered walkers. Click here for the form. Health screenings begin at 8:45 a.m. There will be a brief program at 9:30 a.m. The walk begins at 10 a.m. If it is raining, the walk will take place inside Public Hall.

Walkers are encouraged to car pool. Cars, vans and buses may be parked in the Municipal Lot at East 9th Street and the Shoreway for $3. Exact change is required. Free shuttles will transport the walkers from the Municipal Lot to Mall C.

Neighborhood Family Practice recently expanded their services with a new facility at 14037 Puritas Avenue, in Puritas Park Plaza. A grand opening will be held today, Thursday, August 14, from 3 to 5 p.m. Meet the staff and enjoy light refreshments and entertainment.    

 

The former Family Tire location at West 176th Street and Lorain Avenue is being cleaned up and "white boxed" by the property owners in preparation for as yet unnamed tenants.

The Cleveland Kennel is in need of cat and dog-related pet supplies. Drop-off points are at Style Mutt, Classy K-9z, Savor the Moment, West Park Massotherapy, and Puritas Nursery. This collection effort is by a local organization

 

Looking for some adult summer fun and friendly competition? The West Park Summer Olympics has been moved to Sunday, August 17. Sign up at participating establishments along Lorain Avenue near Rocky River Drive. An opening ceremony is at noon. The games begin at 1 p.m. 

 

Franciscan Village is seeking donations to restore a shrine to the Blessed Mother that was built decades ago. All contributions are tax deductible and may be sent to Franciscan Village, Attention: Grotto Restoration, 3648 Rocky River Drive, Cleveland, OH 44111.  

 

Our Lady of Angels Church, 3644 Rocky River Drive, holds its annual Fall Festival the weekend of September 12, 13, and 14. Rides, food, and casino games make this a favorite neighborhood event. For more information, call 216-252-2332.  

 

On Sunday, September 14, the 13th Annual Cleveland Heroes Run takes place, starting at 8:30 a.m. The race starts and finishes at St. Joseph Academy, 3470 Rocky River Drive.
