SAINT JOHN THE EVANGELIST

Communities of Faith, Knowledge, and Service

 Sacred Scripture: Exodus 20:1-3

In those days, God delivered all these commandments:

"I, the LORD am your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery. You shall not have other gods beside me ..."

Principal's Message

Dear Saint John School Families,

As we get ready to celebrate our school at the Roarin' 20s Auction & Gala, we are reminded of how grateful we are for our school community. This is a time where we can all come together to raise funds for our school to further our academic excellence, strengthen our faith and service to others, and educate the future generation of Catholic leaders.

A great evening is in store for you at the Sheraton Carlsbad Resort and Spa on March 21, 2015. Enjoy a lovely evening as you step back in time to a distinctive era that was filled with unprecedented prosperity and change. Revel in some of the new silent auction baskets before a three course dinner. Then join us for the most important part of the evening, the LIVE auction and Fund a Need. With your support, we hope to continue the transformation for Project Domino to enhance the educational experience of our children.

Since last year's Auction, we have made great strides toward this effort and plans are underway to begin construction this summer. This is all due in great part to your generosity and we sincerely thank each and everyone of you for being a part of our school.

On behalf of our entire Saint John School staff, we hope you will join us at the Roarin' 20s Auction & Gala and enjoy what will surely be the "Community Event of the Year".

Peace and blessings,

Dan Schuh, Principal

Project Domino & Library Update

Work continues to move forward on Project Domino. We have signed a contract with Online Builders, an Encinitas contractor. In anticipation of meeting the completion date of August, some of the construction work will begin before school dismisses for the summer. We will provide more details on the scope of this early construction as it becomes available. In order to accomplish this, the school library will be completely shut down when we return from Easter break on April 13th. Mrs. Mattera will work with the students and families to ensure all library materials are returned in a timely manner.

Strategic Plan:

We have recently added our Saint John School Strategic Plan to School Speak. It will also be on the school website. Please skim or read it when you have an opportunity. It provides a self-assessment and evaluation of the school's strategic areas. It also provides an outline of goals and action plans to meet the three to five year benchmarks. The Annual Fund and Project Domino are part of the Strategic Plan. We invite your comments and suggestions and will survey your ideas more in-depth in the New Year.

Parish Meeting Rooms

To groups who use the parish facilities for meetings:

Please help us to be good neighbors. We ask that you please reset the meeting room to the way you found it. It is understandable that you may need to move chairs and tables around during the course of your meeting/event. However, please reset the room to its original state before leaving. Often, the rooms are used by groups in the evenings and we want to have the rooms in the appropriate set up/condition. Parish staff are not always available to "reset" the rooms. Thank you so much for your cooperation and understanding!

GREEN MY LIFE

Hey, Earth Lovers,

Want to know what's going on? Well, we are having some great SoCal weather. Earlier this week we received a gift of a little rainstorm, even though local Californians will have to cut back on water usage for rationing because we are in the fourth year of the drought. This means we have to be extra careful about using water inappropriately- it's not a joke!

From February 26th to March 4th, Encinitas will receive more rain with 50-60% chance of rain on Saturday and Sunday. One thing you can do to extend the benefits of these showers is to collect the water from the rain showers in buckets to pour on your backyard plants- not only will they love a little extra attention, but you'll feel great about doing something productive while helping the earth at the same time! Although it won't be the best time to go to the beach, you can spend the rainy weekend doing some pre-spring cleaning around the house. Thanks for reading these tips, and enjoy beautiful California!

                                       Sincerely,

                                 Emily Tulino, 6th grade

                              Commissioner of Ecology

CRS Rice Bowl Project

Forty years ago, Catholics in the United States wanted to respond to the famine in Africa. They asked themselves if they could feed the hungry through Lenten prayers, fasting, and almsgiving. The answer was yes and it came in the form of a small cardboard box. Forty years later, the Rice Bowl Project continues to bring help to those in need. It is sponsored by Catholic Relief Services. Many of you may remember the program from your Catholic school days.

Each student will be given a special cardboard box that will be used to hold money. We ask that your family thoughtfully consider how you can put donations in the box. For example, you may choose to "give up" something (a common Lenten tradition). You could give up going to Starbuck's one day and put the money you would have spent on a latte in the Rice Bowl box instead. Perhaps students can give for their time by completing extra chores and putting any money earned in the Rice Bowl. Get the whole family involved in deciding what works best for your family. The project runs through the Lenten season.

If you are a more modern, tech savvy type of family, you may want to consider downloading the CRS Rice Bowl app from Google Play or the App Store. You can make donations directly from your mobile device. Otherwise, we suggest you put the collection box in a special place in your home, for example, your kitchen or dining room table. That way, you can continue to reflect and prepare for your Lenten journey on a daily basis while serving our brothers and sisters in need.
