Class of 2013 

Saint Louis University's Program in Physical Therapy continues to grow, and this year the program graduated a total of 152 students, including 76 Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science (Physical Therapy) and 67 Doctor of Physical Therapy students. Physical therapy students were also recognized for their academic accomplishments, which included 35 students selected for the Doisy College of Health Sciences Alpha Eta National Honor Society, and six students selected for the Alpha Sigma Nu Jesuit Honor Society, one of the highest honors that can be given on a Jesuit campus. In addition, Amy Keys, BSES graduate, received the outstanding Undergraduate Student of the Year Award from the Doisy College of Health Sciences alumni board. 


Cheryl Cavallo, Ph.D., 1946-2013
Cheryl Cavallo, Ph.D., assistant professor emerita of physical therapy at Saint Louis University, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 24, after a valiant battle with breast cancer. She was 66. 

"Cheryl saw her profession as a gift, but it was a gift because she could serve other people," said Darina Sargeant, Ph.D., associate professor of physical therapy at SLU, and one of Cavallo's closest friends. Read More >

Awards 
Taylor Streid, BSES (physical therapy) graduate, was named the Most Outstanding Female Senior Student Athlete and nominated for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. Streid, who swims on SLU's Women's Swimming and Diving Team, was also named to the 2013 Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll. Taylor is pictured above, third from left.
Mark Reinking, P.T., Ph.D., associate professor of physical therapy, was the recipient of the 2012 Dorothy E. Baethke-Eleanor J. Carlin Award for Excellence in Academic Teaching. The award acknowledges individuals who have made significant contributions to physical therapy education through excellence in academic teaching as exemplified in the professional and teaching careers of Dorothy E. Baethke and Eleanor J. Carlin. Read More >
Ethel Frese, associate professor of physical therapy, received the Cardiovascular-Pulmonary Section 2013 Merit Award from the American Physical Therapy Association, the Certificate of Leadership from Saint Louis University Women's Commission, and was honored at the Saint Louis University Women's Commission YWCA Leader Luncheon. 
International Network Expansion

Carol Beckel, associate professor of physical therapy and director of clinical education, is excited to announce that SLU's program in physical therapy now has two active international clinical experiences: Hillside Health Care International in Punta Gorda, Belize, and two clinical locations in rural Italy. Hillside offers students the opportunity to participate in community based rehabilitation, and combines education regarding physical therapy and treatment. Clinical sites in Italy have been provided by EduGlobal, a company that assists in placing students, and allows students to work primarily with patients recovering from neurological and orthopedic injuries.

PT Professor Receives Pilot Grant
Joanne Wagner, P.T., Ph.D., assistant professor of physical therapy, has received a $43,686 pilot grant from the National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society to examine the relationships between spinal cord injury, sensorimotor impairment, symmetry and coordination of walking, and mobility problems in persons with MS.  Read More >
Irma Ruebling Distinguished Speaker Series

The Irma Ruebling Distinguished Speaker Series, presented by SLU's program in physical therapy, welcomed Edelle Field-Fote, P.T., Ph.D., professor in the departments of physical therapy and neurological surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine on Thursday, March 21, 2013. Dr. Field-Fote discussed "Up to Standard: aligning practice, research, and the ideals of our profession". Read More >

New Faculty
Sara Scholtes, P.T., D.P.T., Ph.D., assistant professor of physical therapy, joined SLU in July 2012. Her current research focuses on finding a better way to understand movement and ways in which to change movement in those with musculoskeletal problems. View Sara's Faculty Profile >
Jason Bennett, P.T., S.C.S., A.T.C., assistant professor of physical therapy, recently relocated from the athletic training program to the program in physical therapy. He will be teaching the musculoskeletal sequence, evidence-bases practice, and therapeutic modalities. View Jason's Faculty Profile >
The Theresa Bernsen Memorial Award

This year marks the official formation of the Theresa Bernsen Memorial Award. Theresa Bernsen (1965-2010) was the first honors graduate in physical therapy, receiving her undergraduate Honors Physical Therapy degree from Saint Louis University in 1986. In recognition of her tireless work as a faculty member in the program in physical therapy assisting students enrolled in the honors program, the Theresa Bernsen Memorial Award has been established to help program in physical therapy honors students meet expenses associated with completing their honors thesis. Juliana Silver, the 2012 award recipient, who is now in her senior year remembers Bernsen fondly. "Her enthusiasm for honors work was one of the things that drew me to SLU. I'm privileged to receive this award in her honor," said Silver. Read More >

 

 

Message from the Program Director

Welcome to the first E-Newsletter from the Saint Louis University Program in Physical Therapy! 2013 marks the 80th year of our program, and we remain fully committed to our mission of preparing excellent physical therapists in the Jesuit tradition. While there was much to celebrate in this past year, we mourned the passing of our long time faculty member and friend, Cheryl Cavallo, P.T., Ph.D. In this issue, you can read about the memorial fund established in her honor, as well as the first award given of the Theresa Bernsen Memorial Fund to a DPT student. Our faculty and staff are grateful for a successful year, and are excited to share a few of the events of the year with you in this new format. We hope that you enjoy reading!
