Teaching Children their value as Children of God
Principal's Notes
Dear parents and families,

This passed Monday we entered Ordinary Time in the Catholic Calendar. As the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops have written: "The Sundays and weeks of Ordinary Time ... take us through the life of Christ. This is the time of conversion. This is living the life of Christ. Ordinary Time is a time for growth and maturation, a time in which the mystery of Christ is called to penetrate ever more deeply into history until all things are finally caught up in Christ."

I pray all our students and families continue to grow closer to Christ this year and I will ensure our Saint Michael Catholic School never loses sight of its mission in this regard.

We will shortly be releasing our tuition rates for next year, however there will be some changes to how tuition is collected. For the 2017-2018 school year, parents will have two options: sign up for FACTS and make your payments monthly, or pay for the year in full over the summer. This will be a great benefit to our front office and parish accounting which will make us able to budget our finances much more accurately. To help with this change, Mrs. Carlstrom will host a FACTS Night on January 19 for all parents who would like assistance registering with FACTS. There is more information in a section below about the FACTS night.

This is a reminder that Scantron Testing will began this week and will run through the first week in February.  The results of your child's January Scantron Performance Series assessment will be included with the second quarter report cards. Please note that this is the second assessment of the school year. A baseline test was administered in September, and a final test will be administered in April. Attached is a letter from  Leslie Lipovski, Ph.D., Curriculum Coordinator for the Arlington Diocese Office of Catholic Schools.  The letter provides a brief description of each score on the results report. Click  here  for the complete Diocesan letter.

Due to the Inauguration on Friday, January 20th, the school will be closed that day. This was not on the original school calendar and has recently been altered. There is no school for students January 16, 17, or 20th next week (Monday, Tuesday, Friday).

International Night has been postponed and will be rescheduled at a time this Spring.

Lunch orders were sent home today. Please fill them out and send them in prior to the 27th.

I am pleased to announce that we will have a student teacher joining our school beginning on January 17. First she will work in 4th/5th grade with Mrs. Kelling, and then in Kindergarten with Mrs. Hopkins. She will be observing, assisting the lead teacher, and eventual leading lessons of her own under the lead teacher's supervision. It will be a wonderful additional resource in the classroom for our teachers and students.

God bless,

Daniel Cinalli

Project Based Learning

Mrs. Kelling's 5th Grade Science class is currently learning about simple machines. To give the students a deeper understanding of the content, they have been designing and constructing Rube Goldberg Machines in a designated room in the Junior building for the passed two weeks. The students are working in groups and thus far the results have been truly amazing.

Once completed I hope to open the room up to 5th grade parents and any other curios eyes one afternoon to see this amazing works of machinery and creativity in action.

Hat's off to Mrs. Kelling and the 5th grade with this wonderful project!

Little Celtics

Greetings from Preschool!

We have started attending Friday school Mass with our 5th grade prayer partners. We re working on winter activities, including snow men made with glue and shaving cream. Please remember to dress your child in winter appropriate clothing; we do try and go to the playground daily, weather permitting.
