Father's message
My Beloved Friends and Parishioners of the Saint Spyridon family,
Summer is approaching and as we are wrapping up this wonderful year, this Sunday we will hold our Sunday School Graduation. I would like to thank all the kids, their families and especially Vickie Adams and Jeanne Palaigos for their incredible commitment to our Church. Congratulations to all of you and Happy Summer!
Moreover, please remember we have started the fast of the Holy Apostles following All Saints’ Sunday. It is a time of preparation before the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul. As the Holy and Great Council stated: “Fasting is a great spiritual endeavor and the foremost expression of the Orthodox ascetic ideal.” Let’s prepare spiritually for this great Feast of the Church.
With Christ’s love,
Fr. Nicolas
Hymns of the Day
Resurrectional Apolytikion in the First Mode
When the stone had been sealed by the Jews and the soldiers were guarding Thine immaculate Body, Thou didst arise on the third day, O Saviour, granting life unto the world. Wherefore, the powers of the Heavens cried out to Thee, O Lifegiver: Glory to Thy Resurrection, O Christ. Glory to Thy Kingdom. Glory to Thy dispensation, O only Friend of man.
Seasonal Kontakion in the Second Mode
O Protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, mediation unto the creator most constant: O despise not the voices of those who have sinned; but be quick, O good one, to come unto our aid, who in faith cry unto thee: Hasten to intercession and speed thou to make supplication, O thou who dost ever protect, O Theotokos, them that honor thee.
Matins Gospel Reading
Second Orthros Gospel -The Reading is from Mark 16:1-8
When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices, so that they might go and anoint Jesus. And very early on the first day of the week they went to the tomb when the sun had risen. And they were saying to one another, "Who will roll away the stone for us from the door of the tomb?" And looking up, they saw that the stone was rolled back, for it was very large. And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe; and they were amazed. And he said to them, "Do not be amazed; you seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen, he is not here; see the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him, as he told you." And they went out and fled from the tomb; for trembling and astonishment had come upon them; and they said nothing to any one, for they were afraid.
  Epistle Reading
Prokeimenon. First Mode. Psalm 32.22,1. - Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon us. - Verse: Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous. - The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Romans 2:10-16. Brethren, glory and honor and peace for every one who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek. For God shows no partiality. All who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law. For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified. When Gentiles who have not the law do by nature what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that what the law requires is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness and their conflicting thoughts accuse or perhaps excuse them on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus.
First Mode.
  Liturgical Gospel Reading
2nd Sunday of Matthew - The Reading is from Matthew 4:18-23
At that time, as Jesus walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. And he said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." Immediately they left their nets and followed him. And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. Immediately they left their boat and their father, and followed him. And he went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every infirmity among the people.

Restoration, Phase 3: We need your help! God bless you.
Beloved Friends and Parishioners of Saint Spyridon,
We are pleased to announce that the efforts for the restoration project of the Church are moving forward thanks to the generosity of the members of the community and of the larger St. Spyridon family. Phase 1 of the project is completed: the altar and the side aisles are restored. Many have witnessed the transformation of our beautiful church and have rediscovered the priceless works of the famous iconographers and artists that adorn the church, including Georgios Gliatas, a student of Fotis Kontoglou Nicholas Stratoulis, Constantine Youssis, Demetrius Pelekasis and Nicholas Engonopoulos. The series depicting the life of Christ on the iconostasis, is the only Byzantine work Engonopoulos has ever done. Completion of Phase 2 (upper level of the nave, dome, Evangelismos, etc.) Completion is scheduled for mid-March. While working in the dome, we encountered a few unforeseen obstacles: nine windows were broken, the concrete windowsills had to be replaced due to water damage, the duct work was in poor condition. And now Phase 3 , the balcony. Initially we had planned on starting this project in September, but we were informed by the scaffolding company that we could save $ 15,000 if we had the scaffolding moved directly into the balcony. The Parish Council being prudent with the funds raised and since it is cost effective, decided to move the scaffolding beginning of March to the balcony and begin in the final phase of the restoration project! We have been blessed to have parishioners, alumni, families and friends of St. Spyridon help us raise close to $ 400,000. However, we are still trying to raise the final $ 40,000 to complete the project. We would greatly appreciate any donation to help us continue with this crucial ministry of the church to preserve and promote our Greek Orthodox heritage in this beautiful country. Together, we know we can do it! Learn more about the restoration progress by visiting our website or by following us on Facebook.
Sincerely yours,

In Times of Illness
" Come, O blessed of my father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was sick and you visited me." (Matt. 25:31-46).
When a member of our Parish is ill and has been hospitalized or may be recuperating at home, the immediate family of the ill person should contact Father Nicolas at  (212) 795-5870 . It is beneficial to both the body and the soul when our priest prays for us when we are healthy or ill.

Seniors News
Our Seniors start meeting again every Tuesday and Thursday from 12pm to 2pm at church.Welcome back! God bless you. This ministry's significance for our community goes without saying.
Library News
We are extremely excited to announce that our community is starting a parish library in the conference room. We already have a small selection of excellent books, especially for children. At this point, we need to increase the number of books and find one or two volunteers to start setting it up. If you are interested, please come and talk to me or call the church office.
