Hello Salmon Bay Families,

More often than not, we tend to encourage time to slow down as opposed to rush it along. To the contrary, many of us are feeling that 2020 couldn’t end soon enough. Not to say there isn’t goodness in any time or situation, but this current year has been a bit much.

Of course, 2021 won’t be particularly easy or stress-free. As a country and community, it will require us to work together to maintain and enhance what’s working well and to effectively and efficiently change what’s not. With open hearts and minds, we look forward to continuing this hard work in all angles of our Salmon Bay triangle: students, staff, families.
Thank you for your sustained support, your recurring resilience and your continued compassion. May your family have a Healthy and Happy New Year!
In partnership,
Darren, Neil and Suro
Celebrations Seen Online
This morning, Salmon Bay elementary students and families participated in a Friday Sing Lantern Festival. Everyone is also invited to join us for an evening Lantern Festival celebration tonight at 6:30 pm. See the Lantern Festival section in this newsletter for information and a link to join.
Middle School students participated in a Winter Celebration planned by Service and Leadership Club members. From snowflakes and snowpeople (like those created this morning in the photos above) to online games and a pet show, we heard that both students and staff had a fun time talking, laughing and connecting with one another! A special thanks to our WEB leaders for helping lead these activities!

Parent Education Event with Rosetta Lee
THE FOSB PIE committee hosts Rosetta Lee - Talking To Youth About Heated Topics
Tuesday, Jan 26 at 7pm
Registration is FREE, and required: https://tinyurl.com/Jan26Heated
This event is open to the community.

Description: Young people can bear witness to challenging and/or traumatic events in current events, media, and our local communities. They often process thoughts, feelings, and reactions without our explicit help and guidance - thereby increasing their confusion and anxiety.
-Adults have a natural instinct to protect their children from harsh realities, yet want to prepare them to navigate our complex world - is it possible to do both?
- How can we talk about identity, difference, and justice in age appropriate ways?
- How do you reinforce your family's values while maintaining respect for other perspectives?
- How do you coach children toward authentic and respectful dialogue across differences?
Engage in these questions and more through this interactive online session.
Event Questions? PIE committee chair, Julie Schneider - [email protected] or [email protected]

NSCC Online Winter Classes for Parents & Teachers
Virtual Learning: Focus on Discipline. This is a class for parents and teachers who have a child in a remote class (coop, elementary school) and are noticing behavior challenges, possibly related to the pandemic. This class will cover various aspects of positive discipline and address behavior regressions and challenges. This class number is 9355.

The second class is called Supporting Parents and Strengthening Families. We will discuss parenting styles and dynamics, tools for strengthening relationships, and strategies for challenges.
This class number is 9354.

Both classes are asynchronous (no specific time) and consist of weekly readings and class discussions. Like regular parent ed, the goal of the classes is education and support, and grading is "credit/no credit". You can also audit. Download a flyer with more information here.
