Bike to School Day
Wednesday was Bike to School Day and we were excited to see so many students (and parents!) biking or walking to school. Keep up the great work! 

Remember to keep track of how many times you bike this month on your Bike Month calendar. And stop by our table on Fridays when you bike or walk to school for a special snack!

Staff Appreciation Week
It was a week of special treats for the Salmon Bay Staff. Thanks to the many parents who helped pamper staff by donating snacks or potted plants, helping serve a very tasty lunch or delivering morning coffee.
O ur staff certainly felt the love from  all of you this week! I have been asked to pass along their thanks for your kindness, generosity and support.

Bike to School Month


May is Bike-to-School Month! 
Every Friday we will be providing snacks to students who bike or walk to school. Salmon Bay Bikes t-shirts will also be available for purchase on Fridays. Calendars for tracking how many minutes students spend biking in May were distributed to elementary students. Middle school students can register online. The student who logs the most time biking in May, in each grade, will receive a prize.

Summer Employment Opportunities
Still don't know what you're doing this summer?Various summer employment opportunities are available with the Parks & Rec Department. You can apply online or see   Gail for an application.
 
YES! Program: ages 13-19
Youth Engaged in Service: Job readiness and leadership development program where you earn service hours toward your high school graduation requirement and an additional stipend of $150. Applications are due May 22.
 
STEP Program: ages 14-19
Student Teen Employment Preparation: project-based job readiness program that has teams of students addressing a community need. If you complete 120 program hours you will receive a $599 stipend. Deadline for application is May 18 by 5PM-in staff hands, not postmarked by.
 
YPAR Program: ages 14-19
Youth Participatory Action Research: Project-based program will explore social justice questions, do community-based research, and build a social justice campaign. Deadline for application is May 18 by 5PM-in staff hands, not postmarked by.
 
SOS Program: Open to current 6, 7, 8 graders
Make a difference in your community while gaining leadership and work skills. $150 stipend upon completion of SOS. Students entering 9th grade will also accumulate 15 hours of service learning toward the high school graduation requirement. Deadline for application is May 18 by 5PM-in staff hands, not postmarked.

Elementary Enrichment & Camp Fees
It's almost time for camp! All of our elementary students will go to camp this spring. Kindergarten students will not spend the night at camp but will participate in an extended camp day. 

Camp fees are based upon which camp your student attends and how many nights they stay. See below for a list of fees.  If you have not yet paid your student's camp fee, you may do so online here or by dropping off a check, payable to FOSB, in the Volunteer Coordinator's office.

Many families have not yet paid their enrichment fee (field trip fee) for the year. You can pay the enrichment fee here. Contact Jodi to request a scholarship.

Attention 8th Graders - BHS Robotics Open House
Wednesday, May 30th, from 6-8 pm.   The Ballard High School Robotics team will be hosting an Open House/Ice Cream Social for current freshman, incoming 8th graders and their parents who are interested in joining our award winning FRC team.  Room NW204 / Engineering Workshop at Ballard High School.  Parking is available in the lot behind the school; we'll have student greeters or signs marking where to enter. Adams Elementary Carnival MS Volunteers Needed
June 15th from 5 - 7:30 pm at Adams Playground
Help is needed to set up, work a booth/game or clean up. Work a 30 minute shift. Sign up for 3 shifts, get a free slice of pizza. Sign up here

Summer Skills Center 
The Seattle Skills Center application for this summer is now available online.  These free summer courses for incoming 9th through 12th graders can earn students 1/2 HS credit. The courses emphasize hands-on learning, field trips, guest speakers, and career exploration. Students may explore teaching, computer applications, construction trades, culinary arts, medical services and many more opportunities. Summer Skills Center runs at several locations from July 9 to August 3rd, 11:30am to 4:15 pm, Monday through Friday. Bus tokens or Orca cards are provided. Click here to apply

 
Salmon Bay Boys & Girls Club 

Salmon Bay Boys & Girl Club (Coho Kids Time)

Our very own Salmon Bay Boys & Girls Club is accepting registration for summer camps and the 2018 - 2019 school year. Care is provided on site for K - 5th Grade students.  To register, send an email indicating if you are interested in summer camps, the school year, or both. Once your email is received, you'll be sent an online registration link. You can also call 206-297-7764 for more information.

Watch BHS Jazz Performance LIVE
Ballard Hig h School's award-winning Jazz Band 1's epic year keeps getting better: the band is one of only 15 bands across the country selected to perform in the 23rd annual prestigious Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival in New York in just a couple of weeks, May 10-12. You can s tream the performance live! Visit   https://academy.jazz.org/ee. Ballard's  Jazz 1 participates in part 3 of the competition on Saturday, May 12.

FREE Football Skills Camp on Sunday
North Seattle Titans is proud to host a Free youth football skills camp for ages (7-13) Grades 2nd-7th. May 6th, 3pm-5pm at Ingraham High School Football Field. Camp focuses on basic skills and agilities.  Players wear comfortable shoes or cleats, shorts or sweats. Upon arrival please check in at sign in table (2:30 pm) All players receive tee shirt (North Seattle Titans) and water bottle for participation in camp. Our Town at Ballard High School
The Ballard High School Playmakers are bringing Our Town to our neighborhood! Our Town is a metatheatrical three-act play about life in the fictional small town of Grover's Corners. Performances will be on May 10, 11, 12 and 17, 18, 19 at the Earl Kelly Center for Performing Arts at Ballard High School. The performances begin at 7:30 PM. Reserved seating tickets for Our Town are available for purchase here. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for students and seniors.

Creative Coding Summer Camps
Join Creative Coding for week-long camps all summer, June 25 - August 31st. Camps are held at The Good Shepherd Center, Magnuson and Bellevue College. Students in grades 1- 7. Visit CreativeCoding.com for details and to register.

Summer Fun Arts Camp

Summer Fun focuses equally on the arts as both a process and a product. Over the course of three weeks, our campers mount a new musical while building musicianship skills, acting fundamentals, dance techniques, and creating masterpieces of art along the way. Ballard Youth Soccer

Ballard Junior Football (BJF)
 Ballard Junior Football is now accepting registrations for the 2018 season (August-October) with 50% off registration fees for first year players ($125 total)!  BJF has been around since 1962 and is dedicated to creating a positive, safe and fun football and cheer experience for all of its participants (ages 6-14).  Top quality equipment is provided to ensure the safety of our athletes.  All of our coaches are Heads Up Football certified. North Seattle Junior Titans Football
This Seattle youth tackle football program is dedicated to teaching the fundamentals in a structured and positive environment. Open to children between the ages of 7-14. Players are assigned to a team by their age and weight. Practices begin August 6th@ Ingraham High School, and will be held Monday through Friday, through the end of August; then 3 times a week after Labor Day weekend.

Ultimate Frisbee Clinic
Come join us for an afternoon of Ultimate at Roosevelt High School Playfield! Seattle Cascades pro men and women are here to help you improve your skills and learn new strategies! Our clinics are for all: beginner to advanced, all genders. Cost is $30 for the clinic, or $40 includes a disc, shorts, or shirt (one item).
