NEW!  JOIN OUR SALSA CALIENTE KIDS TEAM
Salsa Caliente is starting a kids team! It will be a local performance group with rehearsals once a week. We currently have 7 kids ready to start with us between ages 6-11 but all ages are welcome.


SALSA CALIENTE KIDS TEAM
Saturdays 4:00- 5:00pm starting April 9
Cafe Casablanca, 2524 Bridge St, Victoria, BC

Learn exciting choreographies to perform at local events as well as the history of the dance and the music. 

The team will be under the direction of Christina Morrison. Christina has been dancing her whole life. With a background in music (she also plays the saxophone) as well as ballet, jazz and competitive ballroom, she has been dancing salsa for over 18 years and is one of the only instructors in Canada certified by the World Salsa University in Puerto Rico to teach LA, New York & Puerto Rican Salsa. For 15  years Christina has been the director & choreographer of the internationally touring dance company Salsa Caliente and has traveled to perform all over the West Coast as well as in Italy, Puerto Rico, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, the Bahamas and Mexico. She has competed twice for Canada in the World Salsa Open Championships and is now a certified judge. Christina has choreographed for Salsa Team Canada, as well as for numerous music videos and has had the honor of dancing on tour with some of the top bands including Juno nominated band "The Puentes Brothers" and Grammy Award winners "Spanish Harlem Orchestra".

SPECIAL WORKSHOPS IN APRIL
Workshops are held Tuesdays from 8:00- 9:00pm @ Cafe Casablanca, 2524 Bridge St.
$12 drop in or $55 for a 5 class punch card (+$2 min charge at the cafe).  
No partner or experience required.  Drop ins welcome. 

APRIL 5- SPINNING FOR SALSA 
Learn the techniques for spinning, balance, and multiple turns. This workshop series will cover drills to help eliminate dizziness when spinning, improve balance, preparations for turns, stationary spinning adding spins to partnerwork.  

APRIL 12-  COMPETITION PREPARATION
Come to this workshop to get insider tips on what the judges at this year's Amateur Salsa Competition will be looking for in terms of your routine, costumes, appearance, partnering and more!

APRIL 19- INTRO TO SON
Son is a style of music & dance that gained worldwide popularity in the 1930s. Come and learn all about it!

APRIL 26- PUERTO RICAN BOMBA & PLENA
Bomba is a Puerto Rican folkloric dance that first developed in the late 17th century as a way for slaves to continue to worship their African gods once their religion had been banned. The dance involves a call and answer between the drums and the dancers and its movements typically revolved around events in the community. This is one of the dances that Salsa steals its body movement from. The Plena is an important folkloric dance of Puerto Rico. The music may have originated as early as the late 1800's with the dance being added in the1920s. It was referred to as the "singing newspaper" and related events of the day from town to town. Come and learn this fun couples dance that is tied to the roots of Salsa dancing.
DROP IN CLASS SCHEDULE

SALSA ON 2 (MAMBO) & CHA CHA CHA
Salsa On 2 is danced to the rhythm of the congas and the techniques used allow for quick turns and direction changes, complex partner patterns and more body movement while dancing on a crowded dance floor.  This is not just On1 moved over a count. 
BEGINNER FUNDAMENTALS- Tuesdays, 7:00- 8:00pm
Come and learn the differences and experience the music and the dance in a whole new way! We`ll also teach you to Cha Cha Cha the way they do in Salsa clubs!   This class will introduce you to the essentials by starting with the basic steps and moving through to basic partner combinations. Learn to move your body to the rhythm of Latin music and practice leading and following techniques to get you ready to move to the next level. No dance experience or partner required! 
INTERMEDIATE- Mondays, 6:30- 7:30pm
Challenge yourself to improve in this class.  We will be working on body movement, spinning, shines, ladies styling and more. Each class will start with an open footwork combination (shine) and continue to a partnerwork combination. Must be a competent On 2 dancer or have instructor permission to attend. No partner required.  (pay for this class and attend Fundamentals the next day for free!)
 
SALSA ON 1
LA Style Salsa is one of the newest forms of salsa having been developed in the late 1990's with a strong Hollywood influence. This style is characterized by large, flashy moves and is based on variations on the Crossbody Lead. 
BEGINNER- Thursdays, 9:00- 10:00pm
This class will introduce you to the essentials by starting with the basic steps and moving through to basic partner combinations. Learn to move your body to the rhythm of Latin music and practice leading and following techniques to get you ready to move to the next level. No dance experience or partner required! 
IMPROVERS- Thursdays, 8:00- 9:00pm
Get really comfortable with all of your foundations and learn how to combine the moves you already know into smoothly flowing combinations that are great on the social dance floor! We will also be working on body movement, spinning, shines and ladies styling. Each class will start with an open footwork combination (shine) and continue to a partnerwork combination. The shines portion of the class is a great way to improve balance, timing, speed and coordination. Must have completed Beginner Salsa On 1 or have instructor permission to attend. No partner required.  (pay for this class and stay for beginner for free!)
 
BACHATA
Bachata is a dance from the Dominican Republic that is now popular all over the world!
ALL LEVELS- Thursdays, 7:00- 8:00pm
This all levels class will get you started with all of the basics you need to have a great dance and then teach you to dip & sway your way into a dance to remember! WARNING- This workshop is going to get sexy!!! There will be lots of time to social dance and practice what you have been learning during class.
