San Diego County Sheriff - February 2017 |
Welcome to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department Newsletter
Right now, inmates at the Las Colinas Women's Jail are learning valuable skills that will help them find work when they are released from custody.
The Sheriff's Sewing Program is just one of many programs we offer to give inmates a second chance.
Many of you will be watching Super Bowl LI between the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons. Sheriff's Deputies will spend Super Bowl Sunday patrolling our roadways for any sign of impaired drivers.
Don't drink and drive. If you are arrested, you will go to jail.
I hope you enjoy this month's newsletter. Stop by one of our many community events and say hello. Thank you for your support!
Bill Gore, Sheriff

A difficult past landed them behind bars, but a job training program is helping inmates at Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility in Santee sew their way to a better future.
Click on the above video to see how the Sheriff's Sewing Program is also paying tribute to the ultimate sacrifice of deputies and officers killed in the line of duty across the nation.

Women in the Sheriff's Sewing Program gain the skills, experience, knowledge, hope and independence to prepare them for work when they return to the community.
The Sheriff's Department has partnered with
HONORBANDS, a non-profit group that provides materials for the women in the sewing program to create mourning bands.
The mourning bands are worn by deputies, officers and agents on their badges to pay tribute to their fallen comrades. The mourning bands are worn until the fallen is laid to rest.

The Sheriff's Department is teaming up with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to keep impaired drivers off San Diego's roadways on Super Bowl Sunday.
Watch for increased DUI patrols by Sheriff's Deputies across the county beginning on Sunday, February 5 at 3:00 p.m. and lasting through 5:00 a.m. the following day.
The Sheriff's Department's goal is simple: to remove impaired drivers from roadways and prevent crashes that can cause serious injury or death.
In 2016, more than 1,200 people were arrested for DUI by Sheriff's Deputies. In 2015, the Sheriff's Department arrested 1,516 people for DUI. In 2014, deputies arrested 1,610 people for impaired driving.
The Sheriff's Department has these tips for a safe Super Bowl Sunday:
- Plan a safe way home before the game begins
- Before drinking, designate a sober driver and leave your car keys at home
- If you're impaired, use a taxi, ride sharing service, call a sober friend or family member or use public transportation
- If you see an impaired driver on the road, call 9-1-1 immediately
