Happy 2016 Everybody! I am excited to welcome you all to the new Sangre de Cristo District. First of all, I would like to thank each and every one of you for your support and commitment to your youth in 2015. We had a very strong year in each of the three former districts, with each district showing membership growth. This could not have happened without your dedication and hardwork.

If you had not already heard, the Council Executive Board voted back in September to merge the former Santa Fe, Northern New Mexico and Encantado Districts to from a new, unified district in hopes to provide more support for our units and volunteers across these areas. This is an exciting time for us as we are preparing new and exciting activities for the youth and planning trainings for our adult volunteers to help them provide the very best for our youth.

As one of our commitments to continue improving our support to you, we will be releasing a monthly newsletter (such as this) keeping you up to date and informed regarding things going on in our communities, district and council. If there is something that you would like see announced or posted in our monthly newsletter, please feel free to get in touch with our District Executive, Rob Wright. We are also looking for someone to serve as our districts Communications Chair. If there is anyone who is interested in helping us keeping our calendar, website and newsletter up to date and supported, please let us know. Your help is always appreciated.
Klondike - February 12th - 14th
We are just a little more than a month away from the Gold Rush! With just around 200 participants registered so far, it is going to be bigger and better than last year. To those of you who have not yet registered , it is not too late. Registration is open without a late fee until January 15th. We would love to see you there!

To those who have already registered, there are a few dates to take note of. Volunteer Signup (pg 28) is due to Eddie Dry by January 15th. Your help is greatly appreciated and will help us run a successful event. The Arrival Information (pg 5) and Unit Information forms (pg 6) are due February 1st. All of these documents can be found in our Klondike Leaders Guide.

There will also be 2 opportunities for unit leaders and youth to visit Camp Elliot Barker prior to the Klondike so that they can see they layout of the facilities, learn the layout of the land, check-in prior to the event and claim their campsites. They will be held on Saturday the 16th and the 23rd from Noon to 3pm. Anyone who is interested in participating in the shakedown should contact Eddie Dry to let him know that you plan to attend the shakedown.

If you have any questions or concerns prior to the Klondike or would like to register your unit, please contact Eddie Dry, Klondike Coordinator, by e-mail at eddiedry@hotmail.com

Be A Scout
As a District, we have a resource to help promote unit growth that we are not taking full advantage of. This resource is a BSA-run website called Be A Scout (www.beascout.org). A family that is looking for units in their area have the opportunity to go to this website in order to get in touch with the unit so that their family can join.

As of right now, very few of our units have their units information uploaded to Be A Scout, and as a result, families looking to join your unit have no way of contacting your leaders or finding out when your meetings take place. In some of our cities, like Los Alamos and Santa Fe, we can no longer distribute flyers through the schools to promote your units, which hurts our recruitment efforts.

One of our goals as a new district is to have every unit have their Be A Scout profile up to date before the end of this school year so that we can use Be A Scout as one of our recruitment methods for the start of the next school year. Rob Wright will be contacting units during the next few weeks to gather this data from units, however, if you have the ability to complete it ahead of time, please complete this flyer and e-mail back to him, it would be greatly appreciated.

Friends of Scouting
Our 2016 Friends of Scouting Campaign has begun! Friends of Scouting is our donation campaign to help raise funds so that the Great Southwest Council can continue to provide the best program and service to your youth and units. Donations made to our Friends of Scouting campaign go toward operations of Gorham and Cambell Scout Ranch, camperships to help families with financial limitations to send their boys to camp and activities such as day camps and camporees.

We will be contacting your unit to set-up a meeting time where one of our district representatives can visit your unit to make a Friends of Scouting presentation to your unit. However, if you would like to donate now, you may click the button below do make your donation online. Your support and investment in scouting is greatly appreciated.

Gorham Scout Ranch Summer Camp 2016
Has your unit registered to attend a summer camp in 2016? If not, it is not too late to register your unit to attend Gorham Scout Ranch this upcoming summer. We will be offering over 30 merit badges including 7 Eagle Required Merit Badges, COPE for older scouts looking to challenge themselves on our High Ropes Course and improve their team building skills on our Low Ropes course and our Trail to First Class program designed to help new scouts learn skills that will help them in their rank advancement. We have traditional favorites such as Shotgun, Rifle and Archery shooting and programs that cannot be found at every camp such as our climbing program, which includes a climbing tower and natural rock and horsemanship merit badge. We will even be offering IOLS and Adult Leader Specific training for our adult leaders. If you are interested in joining the fun, please feel free to view our Leaders Guide and complete a reservation form if your unit would like to spend a week with us this summer. If you have any questions or inquiries, please feel free to get in touch with Rob Wright, 2016 Camp Director.

Are you or one of your scouts looking for a fun job this summer? We are currently hiring staff to serve on our camp staff for this summer. We have something for everyone including aquatics, climbing, horsemanship, nature, scoutcraft, trail to first class, handicraft, kitchen and support staff. Instructor positions begin at age 15 with some positions requiring the applicant to be at least 18 or 21 years of age. If you or one of your scouts are interested in working with us, please complete a staff application and submit it to Rob Wright, 2016 Camp Director to arrange an interview.
