Eric Sayers
Professional Staff Member, Senate Armed Services Committee

Expertise: U.S. defense policy, U.S. naval force structure and posture, alliance management.

Where do you currently work?
I manage the PACOM/Asia-Pacific and DoD strategy portfolios for Chairman McCain on the Senate Armed Services Committee. Right now we are conducting a series of hearings with non-government witness on the future size, shape, and service roles and missions of the military.

How did you get involved with Sasakawa USA?
I was fortunate to be selected as the inaugural American fellow for the SPF program at Pacific Forum CSIS in September 2010. This was a career-changing opportunity for me that brought me to Tokyo and numerous conference in the region for a total of 6 months.

How has learning about Japan affected your work?
The fellowship introduced me to a whole network of American and Japanese alliance hands that I have interacted with almost daily in my current job for the Committee and my previous job for Congressman J. Randy Forbes. That alone has been a major advantage for my professional work.

What is your favorite thing about Japan?
The excellent food, obviously! But I have always enjoyed the hospitality of my Japanese friends and colleagues whenever I visit.

Sasakawa USA is excited to announce a new program specifically for our alumni. This In-Depth Alumni Research Trip will allow selected participants to travel to Japan to conduct independent research supported by a grant. Click here to learn more and to apply!

Upcoming Alumni Event
On Wednesday, December 9th, Sasakawa USA will host another event in its "Continuing the Dialogue" luncheon series for alumni. This time, we are pleased to have Rep. Mark Takai (D-HI-1) as the featured speaker to discuss the Hill's perspective on U.S.-Asia policy. To learn more, contact Jessy at [email protected].
