 In the great tradition of '60s and '70s Bay Area all-star rock bands combining players from other groups to make new music, Moonalice features members who have worked with everyone from Jefferson Starship to Phil Lesh. Moonalice formed out of local club jamming in 2007 and has been busy ever since, playing local clubs and rock festivals, opening for U2 at the Oakland Coliseum, and recording a box set of CD EPs. This summer they play at Oregon's Mystic Garden Gathering of the Tribes and the Trinity Tribal Stomp, and after tonight's Ashkenaz gig (Moonalice's first show here this year), there's the Jerry Garcia 70th birthday celebration with the Giants at AT&T Park, a spiritual pilgrimage to Virginia City's Red Dog Saloon, and yet more festivals.
Moonalice's repertoire mixes rock with blues, psychedelia, roots Americana, and folk, including original songs as well as classic covers. Recent shows have featured such fare as "A Whiter Shade of Pale," "For What It's Worth," some Dead tunes, and a rotating collection of Dylan compositions. The band's self-titled debut CD was produced by T Bone Burnett. Committed to "taking the business out of music," Moonalice made its second album, "Free," available only online for free. Moonalice's core members are guitarist-keyboardist Pete Sears (of Jefferson Starship, Hot Tuna, and individual members of the Grateful Dead); guitarist, pedal steel player, and keyboardist Barry Sless (a mainstay of bands led by everyone from David Nelson to Phil Lesh); singer-keyboardist Ann McNamee (Flying Other Brothers); singer-guitarist Roger McNamee (Flying Other Brothers); and drummer John Molo (Bruce Hornsby, Phil Lesh).
