All History! All Day!
On Saturday, January 18, the GGRWHC and a consortium of local history organizations bring back History Detectives at the Grand Rapids Public Library! Our program will begin the day at 9:30 a.m.:
Women and WWII: New Roles and Old Stereotypes Dr. Richard H. Harms
| WWII-era Grand Rapids women operated punch presses in factory jobs previously open only to men. |
Presenter Dick Harms, curator of the archives of Calvin College and co-author of Grand Rapids Goes to War, will elaborate how World War II touched every aspect of life in Grand Rapids, how women on the home-front responded to the nation's "call to arms," a little known aspect of local wartime history.
Five other programs will continue through 4 p.m.: "When the Automobile Came to the Furniture City" (Chuck Snow), "Mr. Rover Visits Grand Rapids" (Melissa Fox), "The Mystery of West Michigan's Sunken Canoes" (Kevin Finney), "Remembering Granville Avenue" (Mary Angelo), and "Still Standing: 40 Years of Historic Preservation" (Rebecca Smith-Hoffman).
Limited parking is available in the library parking lot. Boxed lunches are $8 and must be ordered in advance by calling 616.988.5492 or emailing rsvp@grpl by 5 p.m. Friday, January 10, 2014. Pop is also available for $1. Attendees may also bring their own lunches. Please note that the library no longer has its own cafe. Only vending machines are available.
Check our web site (www.ggrwhc.org) for the 2014 brochure and details. Next week our web site debuts its new look! Go for a visit and see its fresh features and easy navigation. More details in our next email.
