At Western Mass Golf we specialize in tracking the progress of marketing campaigns run by our clients. If you don't know your return on your marketing you are wasting money. How do we do this? First of all we have over 15,000 golfers on our email list in western Mass alone. We sell more rounds of golf each year than all of the courses in Massachusetts and we don't own a golf course. Most of our sales are email based. We use our radio show/podcast to drive golfers to our website. We run events, many of which sell out based on the number of golfers receiving our emails. We are active in over 100 events per year and each one has one sole purpose, to collect golfers emails.
We had our own golf magazine but realized golfers get all of their information on their phones and by the time the magazine was printed the information was outdated. We tried scorecard advertising but the drawback there is the ad is so small no one can read it. And only one person per foursome keeps score so less than 5,000 golfers will see your ad. And there is no room for a call to action just the address, phone number and name of the business.
Have you ever heard an ad on the radio for a package store, one that has the coldest beer in the area. Think about it. Why would a package store in Greenfield advertise to people in Southwick, some 35 miles away. Its a fact that with a local package store their customers live or work within three miles of the store and that is the same for most small businesses. Then why would you advertise to people 50 miles away. Radio is not an effective way to market a small business.
We learned early on that golfers make up only 8% of the population and if we used traditional advertising like TV, Radio or print advertising we would throw away 92% of our advertising budget. We learned that to be effective we had to target golfers. When we send out an email we know only golfers will open it. Businesses know that golfers are a great target to go after because they tend to be homeowners with plenty of disposable income and take several vacations a year. It is expensive today to play golf.
