Mote Presentation and Tour
|
|
|
Our June meeting for Save-A-Turtle was held at the new Mote building. Dr. David Vaughn graciously invited us into the new building for a presentation on the work they are doing and the progress with the Coral Restoration Project, as well as, a tour of the newly built facility. We were honored that he and his staff opened their doors for us. The work that Dr. Vaughn and the entire team at Mote are doing to help save our reefs is really remarkable. All donations that we collected at this event went to Mote, approximately 50 people were able to join us for the tour and presentation.

Historic Tours of America hosted a benefit for Save-A-Turtle on Friday, June 16 at the Key West Aquarium. The event included after hour access to the aquarium, there were food and drinks, face painting, live music by the Durt Bags, a silent auction, a presentation about Lola by Dr. Douglas Mader and we had the Save-A-Turtle trailer on site. It was wonderful to see the support from the community and to see all of the kids who were there and excited about sea turtles. We were able to raise over $2,000 during this event. The event ran really smooth and it was a pleasure working with HTA. Follow the link below to see some photos from the event.

Congratulations on 70 years of marriage!

Long time Save-A-Turtle, Life Members, Margie and Don Jensen recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary! A family gathering was held in their honor and to recognize this auspicious occasion at their son John's residence in Miami.
The Jensen's are some of our earliest members of Save-A-Turtle and have been active in our organization for the last three decades. Margie was a long-standing Treasurer on our SAT Board of Directors, and Don was a permitted member of the Sea Turtle Stranding & Salvage team running down all types of stranding calls in the Upper Florida Keys for many years.
Thanks to Margie & Don for their generosity and caring in establishing some years ago the Robert Jensen Endowment Trust Fund, in loving memory of their grandson, Robert, to assist with funding special projects for preservation and conservation of sea turtles here in the Florida Keys. The Jensen Endowment Trust Fund was largely responsible for Save-A-Turtle's acquiring the Endangered Sea Turtle Education Unit trailer that appears at many Keys events and school programs. Margie continues to this day as one of the founding Trustee member's of this fund.
Congratulations to Margie & Don on their June 19th, 70th Wedding Anniversary!!!

We are in the middle of the nesting season (Nesting Season runs April 15- October 31) and we have had, what seems to be, a higher than usual amount of human-related problems for our nesting turtles.
It is important to remember that sea turtles are marine animals and they
only
leave the ocean to lay their clutches. Male sea turtles never come back to land. Over the corse of the last several weeks, we have experienced multiple disorientations, likely caused by the use of improper lighting. There has also been a case where a sea turtle was found dead on a beach, and a turtle who ended up in a private pool.
These are perfect examples of why Save-A-Turtle is around doing what we do and is exactly what each and every one of the volunteers across not only the Florida Keys but the state are working to protect.
The recent events hit hard for Save-A-Turtle and are hard to hear about, but every day, around sunrise we have volunteers out on the beach looking to protect these amazing creatures. Below are some of the stories to make headlines recently.
If you are interested in helping Save-A-Turtle continue its efforts please consider making a donation.

Lights out for Sea Turtles
|
We are going to continue to talk about and educate about the lighting problems we have going on, until they are no longer a problem. Not only does improper lighting effect our nesting turtles but it also affects the hatchlings while they are working hard to make it back to sea.
It is imperative that we all who live coastally (including businesses, street lights, parking decks, etc) have sea turtle compliant lighting.
There are Ordinances in place regarding what constitutes compliant lighting, plus Save-A-Turtle is here to help!
If you’re unsure what sea turtle friendly lighting is, shoot us an email at
[email protected] to discuss your lighting issues, and if necessary we can bring our mobile educational sea turtle trailer to you for a safe lighting demonstration.
Be a good steward, and remember lights out for sea turtles!
