The New York Section of SME dates back to 1871 when a handful of mining engineers in New York City founded the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers (AIME). SME itself is an international society of AIME of more than 14,000 professionals in the minerals industry across nearly 100 countries.
