So much for knee high by the 4th, how about tassel by the 4th? Things are really progressing here in Ohio, this AM it was 63 degrees, during pollination that is a god send, another shot of rain this weekend would be great. Guys are wrapping up spraying beans, wheat is off, with sub average yields in most areas of 75-85 BPA. Cover crop season is heating up, if you do not double crop beans now is a prime opportunity to get a jump start on establishing covers.

This week we spent some time in Bucyrus, OH hooking up a Salford single tank air cart to a Salford 41' 1100 VT tillage tool. The purpose here is to plant 80 lbs of oats/ acre to chop later this fall, This combination works great for seeding oats, wheat, beans and also incorporation fertilizer!
Why Y- Drops Make Sense
CTCT-20180628_142908
Notice the bulk of the roots within 6" of the plant., that is where nitrogen uptake is maximized just like water!
We have talked a lot about late season nitrogen this year, and for good reason, the potential for a bumper crop is there! But there is more to the Y-drop than just putting down additional N in July to help bump yield. Scenario: Farmer A puts 10% of N on with planter and 4 weeks later (Early-Mid June) puts on the remaining 90% of N with coulter/knife. Now the rain stops, yield potential goes away as fast as your hopes of a big crop fade. in this scenario, 100% of the fertilizer was placed but it was all for nothing, you fertilized for 200 bushel potential and ended up with 110. Scenario 2: farmer puts down 10% with the planter and it is mid June, dry with no rain in the forecast. You have late season application ability with Y drops so you hold onto your fertilizer until you see a good week of rain potential, (July 5-12th). You apply enough fertilizer for 120 bushel potential at the base of the plant, rain comes for 3 days 1/2" at a time and you harvest 125 bushel corn with still most of your fertilizer still in the tank.

When we think of Y drop as a Nitrogen management option using the base plus approach, it sets us up for success. When we look at the plant itself, it tells us fertilizer and nutrients are taken up within 5" of the base of the plant where the bulk of the roots are located. This is not a fad or a trinket, it is simply a nitrogen management tool that allows farmers to get the most out of their fertilizer investment.
