Saving Our Black Boys:

I started teaching Kemetic Yoga to young people in 1979. Since that time I've had the privilege of creating holistic Yoga based programs for infants in childcare programs to teens and young adults incarcerated in juvenile detention centers and prisons. I will soon be working with a research project through Chicago Statue University and the National Institutes of Health to measure the effects of Yoga on young men incarcerated at Cook County Jail in Chicago.

Such programs that use Yoga and Meditation as a means of helping individuals to create a greater state of mindfulness, self-awareness, self-control, self-esteem and the abilities to resist stress and build resilience should be fundamental components to our educational system and justice system. Yoga and I believe particularly Kemetic Yoga for African American youth, is uniquely suited to provide our young men with the YogaSkills they need to create their lives positively.

As Ms. Leeke observed in the quote above, Kemetic Yoga and YogaSkills Method are slow and methodical systems of movement and breath that engage the mind and integrates mind and body. They cause the practitioner to relax, focus and concentrate much better than methods of Yoga that put primary emphasis on stretching muscles rather than focusing on breathing and slow methodical movement.

In addition Kemetic Yoga carries a philosophy a historiography that connects with African American and Latino youth by referencing their own origin in Africa rather than India. We do not use Sanskrit terminology, chants or Hindu influenced ideas that these youth will never psychically relate to. Kemetic Yoga speaks to their experience by acknowledging their contemporary urban experience while giving them vivid images of the accomplishments of their ancestors who gave civilization to the world in the form of science, art, philosophy and architecture along with knowledge of the internal unseen and sub-conscious reality that all humans need to connect with in order to be whole.
