SUMMER 2017

SAY YOU WANT A REVOLUTION?
"Well, you know, we all want to change the world. You tell me that's evolution" was penned by Lennon and McCartney in 1968, a turbulent year indeed.  Government at all levels is experiencing in many respects, unprecedented pressures to elasticize its role - either contract it to make it smaller or expand it to make it larger.  Leaders are striving relentlessly to translate these headwinds of change into a tailwind.   I believe we're entering a new period of renaissance for the government

WORKFORCE OF THE FUTURE WORKSHOPS - STILL TIME TO REGISTER

DO YOU WANT COMMITMENT OR COMPLIANCE?

What should leaders of government who want to build their 21st-century workforce do? Old models must be discarded in favor of proven approaches to create the Workplace of Tomorrow.  Throughout the Fall, the Mejorando Group and the Alliance for Innovation are partnering in bringing the "Workforce of the Future" workshop to several cities around the nation.  I am delighted to be delivering this workshop as I will focus on providing progressive and practical strategies and tools to help you and your organization attract, retain, and optimize talent all in the name of accelerating organizational performance.  Visit the website to find out if a workshop is being held in your area soon.  If you are interested in hosting a regional workshop in 2018 in your city or county, please contact me at patrick@gettingbetterallthetime.com.

From time to time, I will offer a review of a book I've read that is relevant to the world in which you work. I recently finished "Originals: How Non-Conformists Move the World" by Adam Grant.  Disrupting the status quo thinking of "we've always done it that way" can challenge even the most seasoned public-sector veteran, but disrupted it must!    Grant debunks the myth that successful nonconformists are born that way and shares studies and examples throughout history where being unconventional was the way to go...people just didn't know it yet.  I especially like his "Canary in the Coal Mine" section about asking more questions as a driver of performance.  Keep in mind that change is a mindset, so original thinkers do things different and do different things.

I'VE BEEN WRITING AGAIN...
NEWS YOU CAN USE
Curating a Healthy Workplace Culture

As the late management consultant Peter Drucker put it, "Culture eats strategy for breakfast." Before embarking on culture-change work, executive leadership teams should be able to answer a series of questions: What will our organization need to be like to be highly successful in the future? What will our customers/citizens require of us? What trends (including headwinds) should we be aware of?  In what areas would we like to be at the leading edge? Leaders need to recognize and use the levers that influence culture .  The touchstones of a workplace culture include the treatment of employees, credibility of leaders, selection criteria for hiring and promotional decisions and the nexus between the mission statement and employee performance.
