Message from the Executive Director:

As our earliest schools welcome teachers and parents back to school, we are excited to return to the rhythm of regular communication!
We are now in the second year of a reborn and re-branded Schechter and thanks to what we learned, heard, and saw last year, we are beyond thrilled to share with you the fruits of our collaborative labors.
We believe you will be encouraged by what you see. We have a growing team of professionals and lay leaders enthusiastic about the future of Schechter  and  we look forward to inspiring you. We enter this year full speed ahead in deepening our programmatic agenda - to deliver resources, to learn from you about how we can do both more and better, and to contribute to the success of the field as a whole.
Finally, I set last year both personal and team goal that we would have a Schechter professional at each school within the first two years.  We are more than halfway there! We can use your help in accomplishing this goal by letting us know about upcoming dates, galas, events, programs, etc. We'd love to build our travel agenda around such moments of joy and significance.
We wish you joy and fulfillment as you prepare to welcome back teachers, staff, parents, and students. It is going to be an amazing year...we are proud to share it with you.

Schechter Coaching Consortium
Last year, Schechter Network piloted two approaches to coaching: a regional one wherein our 7 California schools had access to Larry Scheindlin for a host of consultations and interventions; and a topic focused one where 5 schools in leadership transition mode had the opportunity to work with Cheryl Finkel. You told us in our annual survey that coaching was a highly valued offering. And over the course of the year through our visits and personalized outreach to your schools and we learned and listened to your needs and priorities.

For this coming year, we have upped our game to provide our schools with the support they need when they need it. We have combined many of our activities under what we are now calling the  Schechter Coaching Consortium

We have prioritized areas of focus that are important to our schools. We have added a roster of coaches with whom we have worked and vetted. And most importantly, we have worked hard to be able to offer subsidies for coaching. We have streamlined the process through an easy to use google form .

Jon, Ilisa, Alisha and Pearl are always ready to talk, strategize and help clarify needs to find the best solutions.

Jewish Educator's Institute Highlights
Fifteen educators from across North America representing 11 schools joined together at this summer's Jewish Educator's Institute held at Mechon Hadar in New York City.
Rabbi Elie Kaunfer and Avital Hochstein introduced participants to this summer's focus exploring broad themes from the Jewish holidays including forgiveness, change, holiness, authority, and renewal. Participants spent each morning immersed in havruta study in Mechon Hadar's vibrant beit midrash.

Dr. Orit Kent and Allison Cook of Pedagogy of Partnership facilitated afternoon workshops exploring the ethical and spiritual dimensions of havruta study and discussed ways to apply new understandings of the havruta partnership with students.
We are excited to offer this year access to mini-consultations with Orit and Allison, and opportunities to join together with past cohorts in a virtual community to share resources, ask questions and discuss ideas. Orit and Allison will host two webinars this year. Each participant left proudly with a copy of Dr. Orit Kent and Dr. Elie Holzer's most recent book: A Philosophy of Havruta: Understanding and Teaching the Art of Text Study in Pairs.

We are grateful to AVI CHAI Foundation and Lippman Kanfer Foundation for Living Torah for their generous sponsorship of this program.

Enrollment for next summer's Jewish Educator's Institute will open this fall. Questions?  Email Ilisa Cappell at
