Kislev 5776/November 2015
Message from the Executive Director:

Kislev & Thanksgiving are here...be happy!

'Tis the season for assemblies, intergenerational days, and celebration.  It is also the heart of the admissions season and we know how hard you are all working to secure the future of your wonderful schools and communities.

By now, you should have received the first electronic communication from the collective email list of Jewish Day School Intermediaries, which includes an update of our progress and an invitation to participate in a survey which will greatly inform the work.

November's visits brought us to Beth Yeshurun Day School, Ezra Academy, Solomon Schechter Day School of Greater Hartford and Chicagoland Jewish High School!  We are learning so much from our visits and could not be more proud of the work you are doing to inspire our children.

In addition to the site visits, opportunities to meet with lay and professional leadership, sharing what we are doing and hearing what we ought to be doing, and both friend- and fundraising, we took a small break for...

...edJEWcon Chicago!

As we head towards holidays and breaks, please know that your Schechter team stands ready to answer any question or help tackle any issue - from placement to program, from community-building to curriculum-creating, and everything in between. We try each month to reach more schools and to continue to deepen our relationships.  It continues to be a pleasure to see you, to hear from you, to meet you and to have you as part of our family.

Mazel Tov! Honorary Doctorates
Approximately 175 guests gathered to watch family and friends receive Honorary Doctorates on November 12th, 2015 at the Jewish Theological Seminary for the Jewish Educators Assembly 2015 Academic Convocation.

Several colleagues and friends of Schechter Network were honored, including: Charlotte Abramson, Dr. Elaine Shizgal Cohen, Dr. Barry Holtz, Arnold Zar-Kessler, Wendy Light, Rabbi Laurence Scheindlin, and Bracha Werber. Each of these individuals were being honored for their tremendous dedication and impact on Jewish education.

Bracha Werber, SDSN Board Member and founding Principal, Schechter School High School of Long Island, addressed the room on behalf of the recipients.  She shared that all of the honorees felt a responsibility for Jewish education. However, this responsibility wasn't a burden, but rather an honor.

Kol HaKavod to each of the honorees and on your years of tremendous service and dedication to the field!

Standards and Benchmarks Rabbinics Initiative
Schechter Network is inspired by the incredible group of educators who gathered together from across the field of Jewish education to participate in the Inaugural Institute of the Rabbinics Initiative Standards and Benchmarks Project.

We were thrilled to see the many schools that participated and contributed to an important conversation through meaningful learning and exploration. It was wonderful to connect with educators from Schechter schools, including Chicagoland Jewish High School, Solomon Schechter School of Westchester, Solomon Schechter Day School of Greater HartfordSolomon Schechter School of ManhattanSolomon Schechter Day School of Greater Boston, Schechter School of Long Island, Robbins Academy, Yavneh Day School, Ann and Nate Levine Academy, and Golda Och

We are proud to serve on the Advisory Board for this transformative initiative and are grateful for the vision of Charlotte Abramson and Rabbi Sheryl Katzman who are guiding this project to fruition.
