The Concord classroom hums with excitement as they see their classroom guests arrive—the Chief Sealth Global Leadership students. For the next 45 minutes, the teens take the helm to conduct lessons in Spanish on topics such as climate change, immigration and other contemporary global issues.

District Celebrates National African American Parent Involvement Day
Superintendent Nyland joined the South Shore PreK-8 School community for the National African American Parent Involvement Day on Monday, Feb. 12. The number of Seattle schools celebrating National African American Parent Involvement Day has grown.
Baro Af-Soomaali: A Celebration of Language and Culture
This February, the Seattle community came together at New Holly Gathering Hall in Southeast Seattle to celebrate the launch of a very special children’s book. The colorful board book, titled “Baro Af-Soomaali,” is unique in several aspects.

Construction Project Provides Learning Opportunity for McGilvra Students

Students at McGilvra Elementary have a front row view of the construction of their new lunchroom and cafeteria. Earlier this month, Integrus Architects visited with second graders to share what goes into planning and construction of projects such as this one, funded by the Building Excellence IV (BEX IV) Capital Levy.

Montlake Student Art on View at SAM

Montlake Elementary student art is on display in Seattle Art Museum's Community Corridor. The student exhibition, "Introducing Myself," will be up through the end of February.

Blitz Visits Lafayette Leopards

The Lafayette school community welcomed Blitz the Seahawks mascot and the Washington Dairy Princess on Feb. 6 to talk about healthy diet and to share a lots of high fives.

K-12 Funding Presentation Feb. 27, 7 p.m.

Join City Council Members Sawant and Herbold, School Board Directors DeWolf and Geary, and WA State PTA Region 6 for K-12 Education Funding and the Effects on Seattle Public Schools at Leschi Elementary School. Thank you to the SCPTSA for having these important conversations.
Admissions Fair Helps Families Connect to Resources

Nearly 1,000 people visited the 2018 Admissions Fair on Jan. 20, at Asa Mercer International Middle School.

The event, now in its third year, helps families register new students and answer questions. Families were also able to pick up a free backpack and warm, winter gloves for students who needed them.

Board Updates
School Board Approves New High School Boundaries

In 2019-20, new high school boundaries will be implemented. Ingraham High School also will have a significant capacity increase due to construction of a building addition.

On Wednesday, Jan. 31, the Seattle School Board approved high school boundaries for implementation in the 2019-20 school year.

Board Recognizes Career and Technical Education Month

February is Career and Technical Education (CTE) month, an opportunity to highlight the achievements of programs in our district and across the country that help students prepare for the college, career and life.

At the Feb. 13, School Board meeting, the board recognized all the great work happening with the district CTE programs and welcomed two students to talk about their experiences with valuable career-connected learning at Seattle Public Schools. Read more about CTE at Seattle Public Schools
