School Council Update #14 - December 8, 2017
|
This week the Board elected Shirley Seward to serve as Chair of the Board and Lynn Scott to serve as Vice Chair. The Board also appointed trustees to a number of other appointments - you can read more about our trustees, the schools in their zones and the committees they serve on
here.
Our Board of Trustees are the governors of this school district. The Board makes important decisions about strategic priorities, policy, budgets, resource allocation and program offerings. It is interesting and complex work and our trustees are hard working, dedicated and passionate advocates for public education in Ottawa. Recently, the Board met with area MPPs to discuss current priorities and challenges in public education and to advocate for change in key areas. You can learn more in our
Advocacy Paper. As individuals, our trustees are available to meet with constituents to answer questions, help navigate the system or just listen to your ideas.
Contact information about our trustees is posted on our website. Our Board and Committee of the Whole meetings are livestreamed on our
Youtube channel. This newsletter always includes information about upcoming meetings and links to the
agendas which are posted on our website..
2018 is a
municipal election year - that is when trustees are elected. The election will be held on October 22, 2018. School board elections often suffer low voter turnout, and yet education matters to everyone. In the months ahead, we will be posting more information about the role of the trustee and preparing an information package for interested candidates. I encourage everyone to take more time to understand the
role of the trustee, to appreciate the amazing work that our Board does, and to make a commitment to learn more in order to vote for school trustee next October.

School Events
There are a lot of amazing events going on in our district. Interested in getting out into the community or looking for ideas?
Convent Glen Elementary School - Socks Palooza
Convent Glen Elementary School wanted to help this holiday season - so they did some research and were surprised to find that the need for socks is in high demand.
Students discovered socks are the most needed item at homeless shelters but surprisingly among the least-often donated. Because of the shortage of socks homeless people are constantly at risk of serious foot disease.
If you are looking to donate some everyday items to The Ottawa Mission, here is a list of other in demand items.
- New men’s underwear (sizes SM – XXL)
- Men’s disposable razors, shaving cream & deodorant
- New or gently used bath towels
- New or gently used men’s steel toed work boots, sizes 9 to 12
- New or gently used men’s Fall coats
- New or gently used men’s jeans, sizes M-XL
You can drop off donations anytime at 35 Waller Street—the front desk is open 24 hours.
Want to spread the word about your event? Send us an email at:
[email protected]. We will help publicize your events.

Trustee Wards - Upcoming Boundary Adjustments to Zones 7 and 11 - 2018 (Please note this information has been corrected)
We are proposing changes to the electoral zone boundaries of Zones 7 and 11. The purpose of these changes is to better distribute the number of electors in each zone. The changes would decrease the size of Zone 7 and increase the size of Zone 11. Five schools which are currently in Zone 7 would become part of Zone 11. These schools are:
Blossom Park Public School
Dunlop Public School
Robert Bateman Public School
Roberta Bondar Public School
Sawmill Creek Elementary School
More detailed information is on our
website
. If you have comments or questions on these changes please send them to
[email protected]

School Councils, Work Plans and Fundraising
Developing an annual School Council work plan is a good idea. A
school council's primary role is that of an advisory body, not a fundraising organization. Sometimes, councils get caught up in fundraising and that can take over discussion at meetings. Some other discussion topics might include:
- School Council Annual Workplan
- School Learning Plan (SLP)
- Principal profile
- School-based services and community partnerships
- Communication strategies with parents and guardians
- School code of conduct
- School council constitutions
Having an annual work plan is a good way for the council to establish priorities and goals for the school year. Aligning the work plan with the School Learning Plan is a great way to make progress on student learning and well-being at your school.
In developing an annual work plan, the council members may want to discuss fundraising practices. Below are some questions a council should discuss when considering fundraising:
- How much of our time do we want to spend on fundraising?
- What is reasonable in terms of what our community can afford?
- How can our school community benefit most from the proceeds of our fundraising?
- How could we connect our fundraising to our school learning plan goals?
- Do we have annual operating expenditures that have to be covered?
- Do we differentiate between fundraising and social activities?
- Are we in a position to support/assist another school community in need?
