Broadview Avenue Public School Star Jumpers - Mathematics + English= StarShips
Broadview Avenue Public School’s Learning Plan is focusing on increasing STEM activities and problem-solving. Some students completed a unit on data management (creating and reading bar graphs; sorting / classifying and data analysis) as well as listening to a 'read-aloud' of the book Star Jumper: Journal of a
Cardboard Genius
by Frank Asch. It's a funny STEM-themed novel with ample opportunities to talk with the class about character education.
The students followed up their data management unit learning about 2D and 3D figures. The goal was to apply what they learned and build their own StarShips! With the StarShips complete students wrote a descriptive text to talk about the 'features' of their ships using the math and new English vocabulary they learned in class. Some ships include special power 'thrusters', basketball courts, swings and secret passageways....all the bells and whistles one would expect from 7-year-old designers!
How Math Helps - Robert E. Wilson Elementary School’s - Call To Action
Robert E. Wilson Elementary School’s grade 6 students are identifying societal issues that negatively impact students and their families locally, nationally and internationally. The students develop a fundraising business plan to lay out the costs and roles for their fundraising event. They plan the event and host the fundraiser. Post event, they look at their costs, revenues and profit or loss. The money raised is donated to the organization they identified as best addressing their cause. The students write a letter and send the funds to the organization explaining their project. Causes this year included: Girls Education and Access to Clean Water.
This is an excellent example of our Exit Outcomes in action. Critical thinkers understand the logical connections between ideas and outcomes; effective communicators connect with people and know their audience; while ethical decision makers model principles that govern their decisions and; in this case it was all wrapped in a mathematical bow.
