School Council Update #21 - February 9, 2018

This is the time of year that many families are considering the best learning opportunities for students for next year. At the secondary level, the OCDSB offers great learning opportunities for students through our Specialist High School Majors programs (SHSMs). The SHSM program allows students in grades 11 and 12 to take courses, get work experience and earn industry recognized certifications in future career areas
while earning their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). The OCDSB currently offers 35 programs in areas such as Entrepreneurship, Healthy Lifestyles, Baking and Culinary Arts, Construction Trades, and more.

Elementary and Secondary PA Day - February 16, 2018
Extended Day Programs operated by the district will be operating on that day only for children enrolled in the extended day programs or eligible to attend PA day programs.
Elementary Report Cards - Term 1 - February 14th
Elementary reports cards will be heading home next week. Keep an eye out for them in your child's backpack.
Middle French Immersion - Grade 4 - Registration
If your child has completed the grade 3 English/Core French Program, you can choose to enter the Middle French Immersion Program. All subjects are generally taught in French in grades 4, 5, and 6, except for English Language Arts and Math. After successful completion through to the end of secondary school, your child will be able to participate easily in conversation, take postsecondary courses in French, and live and work in a French-speaking community. Cross Boundary Transfer Period - February 5 to 20th
At the OCDSB, all students attend a designated school based on geographic and programming considerations. In order to attend a school other than your child's designated school an application must be made during the student transfer application period which is Monday, February 5 to Tuesday, February 20, 2018. Ontario Seeking Public Input on Student Transportation
Ontario is seeking public input on how to strengthen its student transportation system and create a new vision for the future of student transportation that will be responsive to the changing needs of students and school boards, as well as school bus drivers and operators. The engagement focuses on four key areas: safety and well-being for students, equity in transportation services, responsiveness to student needs, and accountability in service delivery. Learn more

Young Artist Award - Nominations open February 20, 2018
The Young Artist Award is a project-based, mentorship-driven youth arts award established for the recognition and encouragement of young Ottawa-based artists, ages 14 – 17 years old, demonstrating exceptional potential and a commitment to excellence in any art form. The award recipients will receive funding in support of the creation and presentation of a proposed arts project.
In addition, the Young Artist Award will provide mentorship support by pairing the award recipient with an established and qualified Ottawa-based artist working in the same field.
Deadline for nominations: April 6, 2018.

School Ground Greening Workshops 2018
Join us for a FREE series of inspiring workshops designed to help you plan a successful and sustainable school ground greening project. Workshops are open to all Ottawa schools and daycares that want to engage their students in creating healthy, stimulating play and learning spaces. Ontario's Immunization Schedule

Manor Park Public School
will be hosting the 2nd Annual Manor Park Bake Sale on February 14th in support of the Phoebe Rose Rocks Foundation! The Phoebe Rose Rocks Foundation was founded in 2016 in memory of Phoebe Rose Doull-Hoffman (a former Manor Park Public School student) to raise awareness and funds for childhood cancer research. The Foundation also supports families who need to travel for treatment.

2017-18 PRO Grants - Interim Report Due 28 February 2018
If your school council was a recipient of 2017-2018 PRO grant, it is required to submit an interim report online by February 28, 2018 at https://education.factorial.ca. Please ensure that you provide an update on your expenditure of grant funds as well as the outcomes achieved so far to enhance parent engagement.
Funding awarded must only be used for the approved project in accordance with the approved budget. If your council made changes that impact the nature and/or objectives of the project, those changes must be reported to and approved by the Ministry. Please remember that funding may not be used for ineligible expenses as defined in the Project Guidelines.
