School Council Update #26 - March , 2018

I hope you had a wonderful March Break! This week sure flew by with lots of activity in schools, at the Board office and in the media. Spring is always a busy time in education and we try to keep you up to date with information in these newsletters.
One date you might want to mark on your calendar is our next Speaker Series which is about equity - an issue that affects all of us.
Equity in Action - April 5, 2018 - 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Speaker: Chris D’souza – Motivational Speaker and Human Rights Strategist
Ontario’s Education Equity Action Plan is the province’s roadmap to identifying and eliminating discriminatory practices, systemic barriers and bias from schools and classrooms to support the potential for all students to succeed.
Join us as our guest speaker, Chris D’souza, walks you through how to deconstruct personal bias using children’s stories and song. Learn what more you can do to support your child’s achievement and well-being and celebrate our unique differences!

Some Important Upcoming Boardroom Discussions
The Board of Trustees has a number of discussions planned on upcoming meeting agendas. A few things that school councils and parents will be interested in:
- School Council Funds Management Consultation - on Tuesday, March 24th the Board of Trustees will consider whether to consult with the community on changes to the policy on school council funds to require school councils to bank through the school district - read more here;
- Indigenous Education Advisory Council - on Tuesday, April 3rd, Committee of the Whole will discuss the consultation plan about the creation of a new advisory council on Indigenous Education - read more here (click on the link for report 18-043);
- Advisory Committee on Equity - on Tuesday, April 3rd, Committee of the Whole will discuss revisions to the policy on the Advisory Committee on Equity. The proposed changes are related to the structure and composition of the committee - read more here;

World Autism Day – April 3rd
Autism is a lifelong neurodevelopmental disorder that affects one in 68 children. It affects the way people interact and communicate with those around them. Each child and adult with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is unique and has their own strengths, gifts and support needs. To raise awareness on Autism, OCDSB will be displaying information about autism including curriculum information, e-learning resources, community resources, and more in the atrium at 133 Greenbank Road on Tuesday, April 3rd. We will also be displaying art and other engaging activities showcasing the talents of our OCDSB students.

Earth Hour is March 24th
Starting out in 2007, Earth Hour is now the world's largest grassroots movement for the environment, inspiring millions of people to take action for our planet and nature.
OCDSB Schools were encouraged to take part in the Earth Hour challenge this year on Friday, March 23 from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm. However you can participate at home on Saturday March 24
th
by turning off lights and other electronic devices that are not required for the hour in order to bring awareness to climate change. Learn more

The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board is considering declaring the following properties as surplus to our needs:

Grant Alternative School
Leslie Park PS
McGregor Easson PS
Vernon property - Plan 93 Part of Park lot B and Part lot 16
Innovation Drive - 2101 and 3101 Innovation Drive
In order for a property to be declared surplus it must be approved by the Board of Trustees. The above are scheduled to be discussed at a Committee of the Whole meeting on May 1, 2018, at 7:00 p.m. at 133 Greenbank Road and will be shared on the website. More information can be found

Join us for a FREE series of inspiring workshops designed to help you plan a successful and sustainable school ground greening project. Workshops are open to all Ottawa schools and daycares that want to engage their students in creating healthy, stimulating play and learning spaces. Teachers, administrators, parents, custodians,students and community volunteers are all welcome.

Ottawa Public Health (OPH) Immunization Surveillance
All children attending school between ages 4 to 17 need to be immunized according to
Ontario's Immunization Schedule

2018-19 Parents Reaching Out (PRO) Grants for School Councils - APPLICATIONS NOW ACCEPTED
We know that good schools become great schools when parents are involved in their children's learning and well-being. Ontario's PRO Grants are designed to support parents in identifying barriers to parent engagement in their own community and developing local solutions to address these barriers in support of student achievement, human rights and equity, and well-being.
