School Council Update #28 - April 6, 2018
|
On April 5
th
2018, the OCDSB hosted a parent educational session on EQUITY IN ACTION. Unfortunately, I was not able to attend, but the Chair of our Parent Involvement Committee, Mr. Mostafizur Khan was there. Today, he shared these reflections about his learning at the session....
"
equity is the condition or state of fair, inclusive, and respectful treatment of people. Equity does not mean treating people the same without considering individual differences. In the workplace and in schools that are equitable, inclusive and respectful of diversity (and complex identities) equity is never a “one shot” deal. It is a continuous process and the goal is to create a “new normal” so that it becomes second nature to think about a range of possibilities, and to check on whom we are missing in our thinking, speaking behavior and attitudes
. "
This is such an important issue and we are so fortunate to be joined by so many people in our community in our work on equity. Together, we have much to learn and so much opportunity for growth. Unfortunately, we were not able to record last night's presentation, but for those who are interested, this CBC podcast interview with Jamil Jivani, author of Why Young Men Rage, Race and the Crisis of Identity is worth listening to:

International Baccalaureate Program Implementation Plan - Merivale High School - Open Houses - Merivale High School:
Monday, April 9th 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Monday, April 23rd 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board is planning to introduce a new International Baccalaureate (IB) program at Merivale High School beginning in the Fall of 2019. This would be the second IB program in the district; there is currently an IB program at Colonel By Secondary School.
In order to best serve the community, we would like your thoughts about some of the implementation issues for the new program. Specifically, decisions need to be made about three things:
1.
Attendance boundaries for the two IB programs;
2.
Semestering versus non-semestering at Merivale High School; and
3.
School start time at Merivale High School.
We have prepared some background information on each of these issues, which you can access from the links below. We will be holding two open houses where these issues will be discussed in more detail. We are also collecting feedback though our online discussion forum. We encourage you to learn more and share your thoughts with us. The consultation period runs until May 1, 2018.
You may choose to attend one of the open houses. Please register for the specific session you wish to attend below:

Math Facts - Mathletes
Making math fun? You bet. You might have heard about this from your child. It's one of the many ways we partner with organizations to
enhance students’ self esteem and confidence by delivering interactive, engaging and inclusive opportunities for teamwork and leadership in the area of mathematics.
How does Mathletes work?
- Your gym is divided into four engagin math zones with students moving through each zone working together in teams to complete as many math activities as possible in four timed
- periods.
- Teams are coached by intermediate students who take part in a 45 minute leadership training prior to the arrival of the participants.
- Music, visual images & high energy fuels the day with scores being tabulated & celebrated at the end of each zone motivating students to keep working towards a common goal of completing thousands of math questions together in one day!
- Mathletes concludes with a ribbon ceremony for all students as they celebrate their accomplishments.

The District has purchased school council insurance on behalf of all OCDSB school councils. However, if your school council is planning to use a bouncy castle, you must ensure the vendor has liability insurance and that they are Technical Safety Standards Authority (TSSA) certified. The vendor should be the only persons responsible for installing and running the bouncy castle. Principals and school council representatives are cautioned not to sign any agreement accepting all liability. Dunk tanks should not be used.
