Our undergraduate enrollment totals 885 and we have 76 graduate students (see the link below for details). We are preparing for our Hall of Fame ceremony on October 28, and are excited about the promise of this academic year.

In what is quickly becoming an annual tradition, a new selection of University of Kentucky Plaid products is now available. The student learning component of the project continues as well.

SNAP-Ed Nutrition Lessons Engage Students in Eight Counties
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP-Ed) provides nutrition education to limited resource adult and youth. In Clay, Johnsons, Laurel, Lee, Ohio, Owsley, Muhlenberg, and Pike counties, special school projects through the SNAP-Ed program have reached over 7,000 limited resource students with nutrition education. Students have demonstrated both knowledge gain and behavior change.

Congratulations to Christy Little, a graduate student in the Department of Family Sciences in the Marriage and Family Therapy Program. She has been elected to serve as the student representative to the Kentucky Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.

Special congratulations to three HES students who will be serving as college ambassadors this year — Porsha Batts, a family sciences major from Paintsville, Kentucky; Meredith Cinnamon, a merchandising apparel and textiles and family and consumer sciences education major from Harrodsburg, Kentucky; and Gabe Jones, a human nutrition major from Frankfort, Kentucky.

The Merchandising, Apparel and Textiles Club Denim Drive kicked off the week of September 19 and will continue until October 31. The organization will collect jeans and other denim items to be recycled into insulation as part of the Cotton from Blue to Green Denim Drive sponsored through Cotton Incorporated. The goal this year is to collect more than 12,000 denim items. Questions can be emailed to text.lab.uky@gmail.com.

Congratulations to Amelia Brown Wilson, recipient of the 2011 UK Alumni Association Joseph T. Burch Young Alumni Award.

More than 30 alumni attended the HES Reunion held on Saturday, September 10 as part of Ag Roundup. UK President Eli Capilouto visited with alumni briefly during the reception.


Congratulations to Dr. Sandra Bastin on her appointment as Interim Chair of the Department of Nutrition and Food Science.

Congratulations to Debra Cotterill who has been appointed Nutrition Education Program Director.

Congratulations to Elizabeth Buckner who transitioned to a post-retirement appointment in July. Liz was recognized for thirty years of service in Cooperative Extension in March.

Congratulations to Dr. Kim Miller-Spillman who has been appointed to serve a three-year term on the UK Institutional Review Board.
