Advanced Special Education for Parents and Providers Workshop

Kansas CEC and Families Together, Inc. host David Bateman, Ph.D. June 10, 2016 in Topeka.

Given the profound need for knowledge about special education, this workshop is designed for administrators, parents, and teachers, and focuses on several main issues of special education: problems with discipline, how to identify other health impaired, Section 504, accountability, working together, and least restrictive environment.

Kansas Legislature passed a modified Seclusion and Restraint in Schools bill (SB 193).  SB 193 passed the House unanimously and it passed the Senate nearly unanimously (only Senator Tyson opposed it).  This is a positive development and overall it is good news as it protects school children in Kansas from the unnecessary and harmful use of these tactics in the future.

The modified bill includes basically all of the Emergency Safety Intervention (ESI) Task Force recommendations governing the use of seclusion and restraint while it extends the sunset on the policy to June 30, 2020.

Survey Focused on Resiliency of Parents of Children with Special Needs

Jameson K. Hirsch, Ph.D., Clinical Psychologist at East Tennessee State University (ETSU) along with colleague, Jon R. Webb, Ph.D., who is the parent of a child with Down syndrome, are conducting a national survey of parents of children with special needs.

Past research on families have largely been focused on dysfunction, or the negative impact of a special-needs family member. This survey will focus instead on positive psychological functioning such as resiliency, coping strategies and the strengths that emerge in such families.  This area has been overlooked in the literature.
