WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE DISTRICT
Community Meet & Greet/Open Office Hours Event: 7 p.m. Wednesday, October 19 at the Philip Sheridan Building

From 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 19, the Ken-Ton School District will welcome families and community members for a special community meet-and-greet/open office hours opportunities with all District departments represented. Superintendent Dawn Mirand will open the event with a brief District update and then all guests will be free to sit down with District administrators and department representatives to ask questions, get to know the administrative staff, and discuss the topics that matter most to them. The event will be held in the Community Room of the Philip Sheridan Building, located at 3200 Elmwood Avenue. Please RSVP solely for the purpose of ordering light refreshments by calling 874-8400 ext. 20342 or emailing [email protected].
State Announces New Draft Learning Standards

Families are encouraged to learn about the new draft math and English Language Arts learning standards released by the New York State Education Department. Comments and feedback will be accepted through Nov. 4. Click here for more information from the State Education Department.
Community Flyers Now Available on District Website

Flyers with information on community activities, events and programs used to only be available in students' backpacks and take-home folders but are now available online. Ken-West Coach Named NYS Softball Coach of the Year

Matt Chimera, a teacher in the Big Picture Program and softball coach at Kenmore West High School, was recently celebrated as the New York State Softball Coach of the Year. Chimera has coached the team to nearly 365 wins over his 21-year career including a state championship. Click here to read the story.
Flu Vaccine Available at Clinic on Wednesday, October 5

Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda UFSD students and families are invited to prepare for flu season by getting their flu vaccinations during a clinic that will take place from 4 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 5 at Franklin Middle School. Ken-Ton Once Again Distinguished for Music Programs

The Ken-Ton School District has once again been designated as a Best Community for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation for the outstanding K-12 music programs offered in all Ken-Ton schools. Only 476 school districts out of more than 10,000 in the U.S. earned this distinction.  Click here to read the story.

After initiating water testing in order to ensure and maintain the high quality of drinking water in Ken-Ton Schools, the District is well-positioned to meet new water testing mandates adopted by the NYS Legislature and Gov. Ensembles Perform Exceptionally at Music Festival

At the end of the 2015-16 school year, bands and orchestras from all Ken-Ton middle schools and high schools performed phenomenally at the 2016 Darien Lake Music Festival, earning top honors in competition with other ensembles from throughout New York State.  Click here to read the story.
Innovative Link Crew Program Provides Warm Welcome & Mentoring for 8th & 9th Graders

Incoming 8th and 9th graders at Kenmore East High School and Kenmore West High School received a very warm welcome from the 10th, 11th and 12th graders who are part of the schools' Link Crew Leaders during a special orientation and transition event on September 1. The innovative Link Crew Program is a specially designed structure to welcome, orient and transition new students to high school and provide a mentoring framework to support them long after they arrive. Dozens of Link Crew Leaders were on hand to help the newcomers feel welcome at Kenmore East and Kenmore West, and they all wore their Link Crew T-shirt the first day of school so 8th and 9th graders knew exactly who to go to with questions. This international program has been extremely successful and required extensive training for the Link Crew Coordinators, as well as training for the students of the Link Crew Leaders. WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE SCHOOLS
The Many Achievements of the Class of 2016:
A total of 560 graduates were celebrated at the end of June, nearly  half of whom were honored for earning at least one of the following: an Advanced Regents Diploma, an Advanced Regents Diploma with Honors, a Technical Endorsement on their Regents Diploma, or as candidates for the prestigious International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma. A total of 47 students were IB Diploma candidates who were accepted into at least 65 different colleges and universities including some of the most selective in the nation. The Class of 2016 also included 22 students who successfully completed the requirements of Ken-Ton's innovative Career Academies. Click here to read more about the achievements of the Class of 2016.

Art Students Take Part in Special Painting Workshop
Over the summer, select art students at Kenmore West took part in a special painting workshop at the UB Anderson Art Gallery. Not only did they get a special tour of the gallery, but they were also able to create their own paintings after seeing the exhibitions up close. Click here to read the story.
Unique Running Program Imparts Valuable Life Lessons 
During the 2015-16 year, students at multiple schools had the chance to grow as individuals through the unique Girls on the Run Program. This program uses the process of preparing for a 5K to teach the importance of nutrition, health and fitness, and build self-esteem and confidence. Click here to read the story.
Teacher Plays Vital Role at National Wind Competition 
Franklin Middle School teacher Andy Lueth received praise from organizers of the U.S. Department of Energy and National Renewable Energy Laboratory 2016 Collegiate Wind Competition for being an integral part in the second annual event.  Click here to read the story.
Ken-East Band Students Win Praise as Jazz Quintet
The Buffalo Niagara Blues Festival, Lewiston Jazz Festival, Night Lights Festival, and main stage at the Music is Art festival on Sept. 10 were just some of the stops during the summer for the acclaimed French Quarter Hounds, a group of 5 Kenmore East band students.  Click here to read the story.
Ken-West 8th-Grader Wins Limo Ride to Anderson's
On the first day of school, a lucky eighth-grade student at Kenmore West High School won a limo ride to Anderson's and gift certificates for ice cream for her and her friends through the school's annual kick-off event that promotes a positive school culture.  Click here to read the story.
Art Students Earn Valuable Adobe Certifications
From the high schools, 29 Multimedia students earned at least one Adobe certification during the 2015-16 school year through Adobe Digital Learning Services. The multimedia art programs also achieved an extraordinary pass rate of 100 percent during the year.  Click here to read the story.
