Schubert Street Water Main Completion!
We are very pleased to announce the recent resurfacing of Schubert Street, between Clark and Halsted Streets. This concludes a desperately needed water main enhancement project that the City of Chicago's Department of Water Management (DWM) that began in late summer of 2013.
The project replaced 1,134 feet of obsolete, 6-inch wide water main dating from 1904 with a more modern, 8-inch main. The new main will quadruple the amount of water that can flow through the line, limiting the likelihood of a future break.
Due to the tremendous deterioration that the main had experienced over the past century, DWM encountered substantial difficulty when installation of the main began. In addition, there were a number of "below grade" obstructions such as pipes, wood and utility lines that required particular care to remove so as not to interfere with the future operational ability of the main.
Finally, the resurfacing of the street was delayed due to the early onset of the Polar Vortex that impacted our region. I therefore kept in close contact with Commissioner Tom Powers of the Department of Water Management throughout the winter and spring to ensure that, when these plants did open for the season, Schubert Street was one of the first projects slated for completion to in 2014.
