This week MCS will open its doors on Thursday evening, September 29th, for the Fall Open House. At a recent weekly administrative team meeting, it was mentioned that many families appear confused about the difference between an open house and a parent/teacher conference. Fabulous! That gave me an idea for this week’s Principal’s Corner!
What's the difference between an open house at MCS and parent-teacher conferences? The short answer to the question is that school open house is a designed for the benefit of all parents as a group, and a conference is a time for individual parents. But each school event has its own purpose as well, so it's worth talking about what the aims of the open house and the parent-teacher conferences are.
The MCS School Back to School Night Open House
For parents with fond memories of school, the open house night can be a nostalgic evening. It's short and sweet and designed for parents and students to have a brief time to get acquainted with the teacher (or teachers), see the classroom and perhaps get a quick overview of class expectations and the year's curriculum. The school PTO will have an information table and will be presenting the critical events on their calendar as well as reminding everyone of the importance of pitching in to help on a least one activity. This evening is geared toward putting the school or grade in the best light, and giving parents a chance to connect faces to names of the administration and teaching staff. While it's not an appropriate time to speak to the teacher about your child's specific needs or your concerns, it is a good time to meet your child's teacher and express a desire to connect with him or her later to work together for your child's success at school.
The Parent Teacher Conference
The parent teacher conference is the time to speak to the teacher about your child. Conferences are typically held before or after school and typically only after school has been in session for at least a month. This gives teachers enough time to perform any routine screenings and to get to know your child and his/her strengths and weaknesses a little bit better. Conferences are designed to give you some one-on-one time with your child's teacher or team of teachers and are the perfect time to discuss concerns and/or develop and action plan to help your child do his/her best work during the school year. Families with students who may have a clinically documented learning challenge should plan to meet with his/ her teacher or teaching team before the new school year begins.
Parent-teacher communication plays a big role in helping your child to have a successful academic career. Since parents and teachers know different aspects of a child's personality, they must work together to solve problems or celebrate gains. Hopefully, you’ll find this Thursday night's’ Open House from 5:30pm to 7:30pm informative and useful in supporting your child’s program this year at The Home of the WAVES……MCS!
God Bless,
Dr. F

Prout Student and MCS Alum inspire us to Go Pink
My name is Angela Figueroa and I went to Monsignor Clarke for 12 years. My three siblings, Francis, Maria and David attended Msgr. Clarke as well. When I was three years old my Grandmother, Gloria Gemma passed away from breast cancer.
Five years later
, when I was eight, my mother was diagnosed as well.
Monsignor Clarke was an extremely welcoming and helpful community to my mother and my family as we went through the scariest year of our lives. I specifically remember teachers taking food to my house to offer support and also standing in my third grade classroom in a circle before lunch praying for her. By the graces of God she found the cancer in early stages and is healthy and cancer-free today. It is extremely important to me to help provide this same support to others in our community who are now experiencing the same fight against breast cancer.
This year for Prout and Monsignor Clarke I decided to take initiative to stand up to Breast cancer and start a team to run/walk the Gloria Gemma 5k. I’m very hopeful that as a community we can have a great turnout to represent Monsignor Clarke well. I appreciate the continued support I receive from this school and hope to see everyone at the walk in October.
God Bless.
On-line registration closes on Wednesday, September 28th at 9 pm.

Intramural Programs Begin
I’m happy to announce that we will have some sports options for the elementary grades K-5! We will be starting out in October with a multi-sports program. The students will be introduced to many different sport games from wiffle ball, kick ball and soccer to name a few! Every week they will play a different game to get them moving having fun and exposed to different sports. This program will be after school on Wednesdays in the gym starting October 12th and run for 8 weeks until November 30th.
January to March we will be running a basketball skills program on Wednesdays for grades K-2 and an intramural program on Tuesday and Thursday for grade 3-5.
April and May we will run a soccer skills program on Wednesdays for grades K-2 and an intramural program on Tuesday and Thursday for grades 3-5.
The idea is to get the grades K-2 exposed to a sport and learn skills while having fun and playing games that reinforce the skills. The grade 3-5 intramural programs will be on Tuesday and Thursday. On Tuesdays they will work on skill building and then we will hold mini games on Thursdays. The program brings in trained coaches to assist in teaching the skills and we would like to have some parents volunteer to “coach” a team in the mini games on Thursdays. Our hope is that the coaches could rotate attending a couple skills practices so the skills can be reinforced in the games. Anyone who would be willing to volunteer as a “coach” for either basketball or soccer please email me at
cbarbato@monsignorclarkeschool.org
Forms must be in by October 7th!
