Nico Rosberg finishes F1 season with three in a row in Abu Dhabi

Nico Rosberg might have had a disappointing season as a whole, but in Abu Dhabi he secured his third win on the bounce, pushing  Lewis Hamilton into second.

The two Mercedes had started on the front row, and although Rosberg's pit stop strategy gave Hamilton a chance to move into the lead temporarily, the champion had to pit later for fresh tyres, effectively conceding the win.
"Austin (where Hamilton won the title) was the low point of the season - since then I've come back a lot stronger," said Rosberg during the podium interviews. "It's great to end the season like this, go on holiday like this."
Kimi Raikkonen drove excellently to take third, pushing his own Ferrari team-mate  Sebastian Vettel into fourth.

It was a less than thrilling race, with most of the on-track drama in the opening lap as  Fernando Alonso and  Felipe Nasr came into contact, sending the McLaren careering into the back of Lotus's  Pastor Maldonado, forcing him to retire.

The podium presentations also included the award of the constructors' championship to Mercedes, who have dominated from the off.
"It's been an amazing year," said champion Hamilton. "I'm happy. I really have to take my hat off to this team. We've truly shown that Mercedes-Benz is the best team in the world."

Abu Dhabi review: Masterful Mercedes, smooth-moving Ricciardo, and why Pastor didn't have a prayer

Pastor Maldonado makes a mess,  Daniel Ricciardo returns to his overtaking best, and Mercedes lead from the front... again - Here's a review of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Where the race was won

It's getting tiresome, it's becoming a cliché, but this was won on Saturday. We already knew that nobody beyond the front row would win the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix - at least, that's what history has told us - and we also knew that barring accidents then a Mercedes would certainly win any race this season.  Nico Rosberghad an excellent start, and built up an eight-second lead very quickly, capitalising on the fresh air in front of him.  Lewis Hamiltonwas left in his wake, waiting for mistakes that never came.
Hamilton watch
Three stars out of five. Well, there he was, in second, all the way except for a little spell in the lead after Rosberg pitted. His suggestion that he should attempt to protect his tyres from the front and run all the way to the end was stamped on pretty quickly by his team, but it would have made a race of it at least.

Pit radio exchange of the week

There was a serious lack of entertainment over the radio waves this week. Usually we're guaranteed some scorn or sarcasm from  Jenson Button or Kimi Raikkonen, but this finale was extremely serious. So  Sebastian Vettel gets the accolade this time round for speculating upon just how much  Fernando Alonso might hate him. Don't worry, Seb. Nando's had such a bad season it's possible that he just bears a grudge against the world in general, not you in particular.

Move of the race

It was good to see Daniel Ricciardo back on prime overtaking form. Some smooth moving past  Marcus Ericsson in the opening laps was impressive, and he maintained that standard to secure himself a creditable sixth-place finish. ( Max Verstappen would have got this nod for his battle with a brilliantly defensive Jenson Button, but the stewards didn't like it as much as I did, imposing a penalty on the Toro Rosso teenager for leaving the track.)

Tactical masterstroke

If Hamilton had got what he wanted, that would have made the last dozen laps enthralling. Instead, Mercedes stuck to the game plan and secured their one-two finish with a sensible pit-stop strategy. It was what they needed to do, and that's why they're champions - but it wasn't particularly great to watch.

Unsung Hero

The Ferraris always get overlooked amidst the Mercedes drama, but Raikkonen had an excellent race today, taking third spot on the podium. Mind you, Sebastian Vettel wasn't that far behind him - and bearing in mind he started 15th after a dire qualifying, in which he departed at the end of Q1 following a mix-up with his tyres, that deserves enormous credit too.

Facepalm of the weekend

Pastor Maldonado finished the season in inimitable style. To be fair to the Lotus driver, this end-of-season crash wasn't actually his fault - he was shunted off the track and snapped his suspension after a collision with Alonso on the first corner. His was the only retirement of the race - not a distinction he would want, but it is, indeed, the distinction he deserves.

Lamborghini Huracan LP 580-2 official - cheaper, lighter and rear-wheel drive

Lamborghini has unveiled a new rear-wheel drive variant of the Huracan. Called the LP 580-2, the
new car boasts a 33kg weight drop over its four-wheel drive cousin, tipping the scales at 1389kg.
The Huracan's 5.2-litre V10 engine has been detuned to 572bhp, rather than the 601bhp unit found in the four-wheel  drive car. This translates to a 0-62mph time of 3.4-seconds and gives the new Huracan a top speed of 199mph. The V10 produces 398lb ft of torque, with 75 percent available from 1000 rpm.
Lamborghini says it has set the car up to offer 'oversteering characteristics, which emphasise authentic rear-wheel drive behaviour'. Chassis revisions include stiffer springs and revised anti-roll bars, while Lamborghini has upped torsional rigidity over the old rear-wheel drive Gallardo by 50 percent. The  caris also stiffer than the four-wheel drive Huracan and gets a 40:60 rear weight distribution.

The Huracan's driving modes, all of which are governed by the 'Anima' button found on the steering wheel, have been recalibrated for the rear-wheel drive car. Other changes include cylinder deactivation technology for the V10 engine, allowing the car to run on five cylinders at cruising speeds to save fuel. Being rear-wheel drive and lighter, CO2 emissions have dropped down to
278g/km.
External differences over a standard Huracan are subtle, but include new air intakes on the front to increase front axle downforce. The rear-spoiler is now setup to work with the diffuser and offer improved airflow around the rear.
Huracan LP 580-2s will come standard on Pirelli PZero-shod 19-inch wheels as standard; 20-inch alloys will be an option.
The car has been confirmed at €150,000 plus tax in Europe, with US pricing still to be confirmed. Even so, a drop of €53,000 over a four-wheel drive LP 610-4 should translate to cheaper prices for the rear-wheel drive Huracan when its cost in the US is eventually announced.

Bentley Bentayga review - driving the 600bhp ultra-luxury SUV

VERDICT:
Bentley's first SUV is deeply impressive, but not a truly thrilling drive
 RATING:  *** 1/2
PRICE:  $23 0,200
FOR:  Impressive chassis; hugely fast for its size; luxurious cabin
AGAINST:  Will attract whole new levels of fear and hatred from other road users; not really 'fun'

What is it?

An SUV that thinks it's a racing car. Well, sort of. This is Bentley's first  SUV - a 600bhp, 12-cylinder, twin-turbocharged 4x4 that's dripping with luxury (if not style) and will undoubtedly polarise opinion.
It's a model that was previewed with the EXP-9 F show-car in 2012, and makes it to production - it has to be said - with slightly more handsome lines than the concept. And that's the last we'll say about the looks...
Bentley has seriously rolled the dice on this one - and held nothing back. Every conceivable engineering, manufacturing and technology avenue has been explored (aside from hybridisation), and the result is a car that is by far the most advanced machine to roll off the Crewe production line.
Engine, transmission, 0-60 time
Power is supplied by a redesigned 6-litre W12 engine with 600bhp and a quite spectacular 663lb ft of torque. This is the only engine available - although smaller twin-turbo V8 is likely to follow. Weight is a whopping 2422kg.
The W12 engine meets phase 2 of Euro 6 emissions, features twin-scroll turbos (for faster response times) plus variable displacement (to cut half the cylinders when under light load). Bury the throttle pedal and it will sprint from 0-60mph in 4.0 seconds flat. Top speed is 187mph.
The now familiar ZF 8-speed automatic gearbox is fitted, with power directed to all four wheels.

Technical highlights

Where to start? The chassis has eight settings - four on-road modes (Sport, Comfort, 'Bentley' and Custom), plus four all terrain modes (Snow & Grass, Dirt & Gravel, Mud & Trail, Sand Dunes). A 'mix and match' mode is also available.
The Bentayga also introduces 'Bentley Dynamic Ride' - an active roll system that uses 48V electronics rather than hydraulics to control and manage the system. The advantage of this, according to Bentley, is to significantly improve the time it takes to counteract lateral rolling forces.
Elsewhere, the Bentayga has electric power steering, adaptive radar cruise, night vision, heads-up display, and a quite incredible rear entertainment system that includes a pair of optional 10.2in removable tablets.
What's it like to drive?
Deeply impressive - with a caveat. There's little doubt Bentley's chassis engineers have worked wonders controlling the significant forces generated by the Bentayga's weight. The electric steering is precise and fluid, with solid and consistent weighting and acceptable feel. Dynamic Ride could've eradicated feel, but Bentley has engineered in a small amount of roll to help the driver understand the level of available grip.
It works in that you are instantly aware of how flat the Bentayga corners, and while the car isn't completely vacuous of feel it doesn't quite communicate like a Porsche Cayenne. The trade off is incredible stability, and only very, very rare moments of upset during mid-corner bumps - traditionally the scenario where sporting  SUVs come undone.
As you'd expect, acceleration is vivid - with little let-up until you're well into fourth gear. Braking (steels for now, but ceramics are likely to be an option later) is strong, with good pedal feel. Indeed all the controls are firm and consistent.
The caveat? While the Bentayga does a mighty job of impressing you, it's difficult - at least on this early drive - to claim that it's a thrilling drive. You're seduced by the pace, the stability and the overall indomitable feeling - but you don't get a kick from tackling a particularly challenging piece of road.
OK, so that's not the point of this car - and in every other area it impales its targets - but for us at least in terms of  driving pleasure the Bentayga comes up a little short.

Price and rivals

In terms of price, the Bentayga costs £160,200. That's £50,000 more than a  Range Rover V8 Autobiography long-wheelbase, or about the same as a Mercedes Maybach S-class. Land Rover will, in a private moment, scoff at Bentley's claim that it has invented the 'luxury SUV' class with the Bentayga - and point to the 45-year history of Range Rover as proof.
There is no other car with off road capability that's as fast on road (or as luxurious) as the Bentayga. In that respect - it has no rivals. Dynamically, a  Range Rover Sport SVR and the  Porsche Cayenne Turbo are a little more visceral, and the Range Rover Autobiography gets close in terms of overall comfort. Nothing wraps it up into a single package like this however.
