Scuderia SW/FOC                        7/27/14

Thanks to 'Usual Suspect', Russ Lack, we were able to hit the road with some good friends and get out of the heat.  Flagstaff is a great place to be this time of year.  I know that I was more than ready.  Check out the photos of the event, courtesy of Pete Gruber.

This month's Motorsports Gathering is just a few days away.  We are leaving the Honored Marque open this month, so those front row spots are open.

On the track day front, I have had some guys express an interest, but we need more!  I want to limit the cars to 20.  So, drop me an email and I'll create the list and start checking dates.

Until next time...

Ciao...

FOC Flagstaff Drive

The FOC got some enthusiasts together and escaped the inferno of Phoenix on Saturday.  Great roads, good friends and an ideal location in Flagstaff.   After a bit of highway, the group broke off, went through Sedona and then hit the switchbacks of 89A to Flagg and Josephine's Restaurant.

If you made it out, you know how much fun it was.  If you didn't make it, see you next time!

 Tizi n'Tichka pass, Morocco

We take a look at the Tizi n'Tichka pass, a fantastic road with true adventure potential in Morocco.

You might have looked at the location of this drive and thought, 'that's as attainable as a Veyron on finance'. Africa seems a bit remote, I know, but don't dismiss it. I reckon you could do it with a week's holiday: a couple of days to drive to the south of Spain, an hour's ferry journey from Tarifa to Tangier, a day to Marrakech, a day driving over the Atlas Mountains then three days back to Blighty. It would be epic, but worth it.

Start point: 31.58526, -7.88406 (south-east of Marrakech)
The route: the N9 from Marrakech to Ouarzazate
Distance: 115 miles
Time: 3 hours

Great for: anything you've managed to get through Moroccan customs

The Tizi n'Tichka - the N9 south from Marrakech over the High Atlas - is spectacular long before you reach the squiggling stretch near the summit (the bit in the picture here). There's much more vegetation for the first part and the mountains are only a hazy outline, when you can see them at all, but there are always corners to enjoy and scenery to gawp at. Once you're over the summit you can tell that you're heading towards the Sahara as the land gradually becomes more arid and expansive.

If you choose to follow the route that Dean Smith and I did in the McLaren 12C in 2012, you'll now need to head towards Agadir to the west on the crazy-long straights of the N10, eventually looking out for the narrower and much more dangerous Tizi n'Test pass back over the Atlas to Marrakech. Or you could simply turn round and drive back along the Tichka again.

Fuel should be available in Ouarzazate at the southern end of the Tichka, and again along the N10, but it's best to start each pass with a full tank. It would be wise to check your tyres are healthy too, including the spare. Be reassured, however, that the Moroccans are a friendly bunch and, amazingly, there is also excellent mobile phone reception at even the remotest parts of the route. As for what car to take... well, if you can't lay your hands on a 12C, then I reckon the road surface, particularly on the Test, would suit an early Impreza.

Where to stay

Marrakech is the place to be. We stayed at La Maison des Oliviers (www.lamaison-desoliviers.com), which is a couple of miles south of the hustle and bustle of the city, just off the P2017 (down a rather rough track). It was genuinely lovely, had parking, Wi-Fi and felt like a steal at €54 a night B&B.

Watch out for

Police and goats in trees. The former may well try to extort money from you for various reasons. Generally, after a bit of haggling, the price will fall to an acceptable pittance and it's easiest just to pay up. The goats will be in Argan trees, eating the leaves. Just to clarify, the police won't be in trees. That would be weird.

  Hungarian Grand Prix -
Hamilton claims thrilling podium, Ricciardo winsLewis Hamilton seized the initiative in the Formula One title race with third place in the Hungarian Grand Prix after starting from the pit lane, while Daniel Ricciardo won thrillingly for Red Bull.

Changing weather conditions and several safety car outings played havoc with team tactics, allowing Hamilton to seize a podium finish just 24 hours after trudging despondently away from his smouldering Mercedes after an engine fire in qualifying.

Hamilton's team-mate and title rival Nico Rosberg came fourth, having failed to overtake the Briton in a desperate last lap battle. Although Hamilton only trimmed his team-mate's points lead by three to 11, it was an important psychological blow in a race where the polesitter Rosberg had been expected to extend his advantage significantly.

Those inter-team tensions surfaced repeatedly during the last third of the race, as Rosberg, loitering in the slipstream of his team-mate, demanded to be allowed to go past. Hamilton, protecting his fourth place, responded that he would let him past when he was in a position to overtake, but while there was still a second's difference between the pair, he refused to slow down.

Rosberg's advantage from pole was reduced significantly due to several accidents on the track resulting in safety cars and yellow flags being employed, meaning the chasing pack took the opportunity to pit relatively early without losing too much ground.

Fernando Alonso finished second for Ferrari, having led until the final few laps when Ricciardo, on significantly fresher tyres, stormed past Hamilton and Alonso.

Felipe Massa took fourth in his Williams, with Kimi Raikkonen finishing sixth for Ferrari. Sebastian Vettelmanaged seventh for Red Bull, and Valtteri Bottas was eighth.

Jean-Eric Vergne, the subject of another of Rosberg's complaints for driving too fast past accident debris, ended in ninth; with Jenson Button taking tenth for McLaren.
