Where has
NAMEPA Been?

August 13th
Cape May, New Jersey

On August 13th, NAMEPA visited the Nature Center of Cape May in Cape May, New Jersey to teach Pre-K through 5th grade students about marine debris. Students participated in a variety of activities including a "Top 10 items" activity where they guess the top 10 marine debris items people find the most of in coastal areas, a rubber band activity where they simulate animal entanglement, and they signed the NAMEPA Plastics Pledge at the end of the presentation as a reminder when they're at home! After presenting at the Nature Center, NAMEPA had a table on board the Cape May-Lewes Ferry to educate passengers about topics such as the maritime industry and marine debris.

August 18th
Stonington, Connecticut

On August 18th, NAMEPA presented at New England Science and Sailing (NESS) in Stonington, CT on a variety of subjects to students ages 4-15. Topics included marine debris, ocean acidification, food webs and Long Island Sound. Students enjoyed participating in a variety of activities including guessing what Long Island Sound Jeopardy and making marine debris magnets!

September 20th
Westerly, Rhode Island

On Sunday, September 20th, NAMEPA attended New England Science and Sailing's 4th annual Catch a Curl Surf Competition at Westerly Town Beach in Rhode Island. After the competition, NAMEPA hosted a beach cleanup as part of the Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup (this year marks the 30th anniversary). Together, participants collected over 1,000 pieces of trash! All data collected at the event will be submitted to Ocean Conservancy to use in their annual report.

Summer Intern
Recaps Presentation
 by Vincent Harris
I presented on symbiosis at the Stamford, Connecticut Boys and Girls Club with my fellow NAMEPA educational outreach representative, Kayla Delventhal. Together we worked to provide a group of about forty six-year-olds with a fun and entertaining camp activity in which they learned about the interdependent relationships of a few wildly diverse organisms and ecosystems. While this may sound a little dense for a large group of first graders during the dog days of summer, it was a concept that immediately clicked with the kids: we all depend on one another. Immediately, their hands shot up with anecdotes about the interdependence of their own lives-stories about their teachers, classmates, parents, siblings, and pets-all centering on a fundamental understanding that life and lives are begot and sustained only through the existence of other life and lives. It is a principle as elemental as it is profound, and, for these young environmentalists, it was encapsulated quite fittingly by a moment of pure joy in learning and a far-reaching sense of wonder created by our universe.

Vincent Harris is a recent graduate of Manhattan College in New York City.

NAMEPA Board Retreat Recap
This year the NAMEPA Board Retreat was held on July 30 in Mystic, CT. Chairman Clay Maitland's opening remarks highlighted the fact that the marine environment is becoming an integral part of every shipping company and NAMEPA's benefit to shipping is as a positive force promoting the marine industry through social media, public education, and industry events. NAMEPA's operating funds are primarily sourced through individual and corporate memberships and sponsorships.   Thus, the more industry supports NAMEPA, the more positive impact NAMEPA can make on preserving the marine environment and promoting the marine industry.
The main topics of discussion at the retreat were NAMEPA's mission statement, member benefits, member survey results, strategic plan, and public education.
NAMEPA's Mission Statement:  The mission statement was updated to better reflect the various groups that NAMEPA interacts with to "Save Our Seas".  Our new mission statement is below and can be found on our website and other communications.
"Save Our Seas" is the mission of the North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA) which is an independent, marine industry-led entity that engages industry, regulators, environmental groups, educators and the public by promoting sound environmental practices. NAMEPA is a non-profit organization committed to preserving the marine environment through educating seafarers, students and the public about the need and strategies for protecting global ocean resources .
Member Benefits:
The marine industry needs an advocate and NAMEPA is that ADVOCATE.  Through marketing, communications, and industry and public education, NAMEPA publicizes the many efforts the industry has taken and the accomplishments made as responsible corporate citizens to the marine environment and the earth as a whole.
NAMEPA has welcomed over 10 new corporate members this year.  To support the increasing costs of operation, the decision was made to increase the annual membership fees in 2016.  This is the first increase since the inception of NAMEPA in 2007.
Member Survey:
The survey results showed that, as a whole, members agree that all parts of NAMEPA's mission are important and that NAMEPA succeeds in fulfilling all parts its mission.  While the number one motivation for members to join NAMEPA is their concern for the ENVIRONMENT, what they find most valuable are EVENTS/SEMINARS.
Strategic Plan:  The Strategic Plan is the guiding document for NAMEPA of the next few years.  The assessment of the Board is that NAMEPA is on target with our mission and efforts.  The strategic plan will be posted on the website,
Public Education:
The requests for our educational materials from our partners and other worldwide organizations continues to grow.  Our educational materials include our marine debris posters in both English and Spanish, MARPOL brochures, and our two Learning Guides.  The next NAMEPA Learning Guide will be about the marine industry.  This guide will focus on the impact the industry has had on our culture and economy throughout history and how the marine industry is an integral part of everyone's daily lives.  Our previous two learning guides are about marine debris and the marine environment.
Closing Remarks:
As individual and corporate support for NAMEPA grows through memberships and sponsorships, the increased revenue will support operational expenses, the distribution of educational materials, industry events/seminars, and industry promotion.   Members and non-members can also support NAMEPA in the form of sponsorships, donations and grants for the development of new educational materials and community outreach programs.
If you are interested in supporting NAMEPA's efforts to "Save Our Seas" through membership, sponsorship, or a donation, please contact Gail Nicholas at g.nicholas@namepa .net or 203-255-4686.  If you have information regarding a grant to support our public education and outreach efforts, please contact Elise Avallon at [email protected] or 203-255-4686.

2015 DCCC/NAMEPA
7th Annual Beach Cleanup

On a beautiful Saturday morning, September 19, 2015, Denise & Brian Benson, Emile & Barbro de Neree, Kate Whalen, Tom, Patti & Preston Meyer, Richard Kelly, Steve Black, Amanda Erb, Lineene Krasnow, Betsey & Gary Unge Greenberg, Kay Dimodica, Jody Swartz, Jeff Ranta and Christopher & Vicki Bastis all participated in our 7th Annual Dolphin Cove NAMEPA Beach Cleanup, which was quite successful and with record attendance.

We were part of an International Coastal Cleanup wherein approximately 9 million volunteers from over 152 countries around the globe all participate on the same date to keep our beaches clean ... to "take back our beaches" as someone said during our cleanup.

As usual, due to the excellent general condition of our community, there was mostly natural debris and very little man-made debris.  We also finished in record time due to the great turnout ... wonderful community participation and volunteerism.
