Emergency Preparedness Tips

TIP #1:  Winter is here and wind storms become more common.  Should a power outage occur please be careful about the use of in-home heating that can cause carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.  Commonly seen problems include:  indoor use of cooking grills; use of wood burning fireplaces without proper ventilation and cars running in garages to heat the living space above the garage.

SUGGESTION:
  • Install CO monitor; check CO monitor battery.
  • Don't use generators or grills indoors, even in the garage.
  • Check now to make sure gas and electric fire places are properly vented.
Carbon monoxide poisoning information can be found here:

TIP #2: The Lake Washington School District's Safety and Security webpage (linked under "For Parents") has details on school closures and other information. http://www.lwsd.org/Parents/Safety-Security/Pages/default.aspx

Green News

In an effort to maintain our status as a Level One Green School and further reduce our school's impact on the environment, the JHS Earth Corp will be running a  plastic bottle reduction campaign.
Here's a mind-boggling fact:
*Americans throw away 2.5 MILLION plastic bottles every HOUR.   - Clean Air Council
We have a much better option:  reusable water bottles.  The Earth Corp will be promoting reusable bottles, encouraging students to use our two new bottle refill stations (more to come at the new JHS).
Consider a challenge at home:  refuse purchasing single-use water bottles and use reusable water bottles instead.  Look for water bottles that are aluminum or stainless steel both inside and out or check out the green guide for better types of plastic bottles. Be sure to wash out regularly.
Taking care of our environment is part of our Rebel pride!

Dear Juanita Parents and Families:

Sending good wishes to our extended Juanita family for a wonderful holiday season and New Year.
As we look to happy times in the ahead, please remember that Spring semester will begin on January 30th which will be here in a flash!
Let's all continue to work together in order to ensure that in this current Fall semester, homework is being done, class assignments are being turned in, and that your kids are in good shape academically.
Please check Haiku/Power School and keep on top of classroom grades. And, never hesitate to email a teacher, or me, when you have a question or need support.
Have a great holiday season and great time with family and friends.
Best Regards,

Gary Moed

Referee Crisis

I am writing to make you all aware of a serious Basketball Referee shortage. I am hoping you take the time to open and read this great article.  To put it simply: Referees nationwide are not being treated as they should and as a result, there is a shortage- including here.
As Athletic Director, it is important to me that we set a great example for  our kids:  we represent our Community in a great way both at home and on the road.  Without Officials, we have no game.
When officials get assigned to Juanita High School, we want them to continue to say out loud " Glad I get to go there -it's a great place to ref."

-Proud to be a part of Rebel Nation.

Join PTSA Donate to JHS Now for Year End Tax Deductions!
Please consider joining the JHS PTSA
.  Joining the PTSA does not commit you to volunteer for functions, it's simply a donation to your school community that is greatly appreciated and re-invested in the school, students and staff. And if you join now, you'll be entered to win a prize package to Great Wolf Lodge. Thank you if you've already donated to our Pass the Hat fundraiser!  If not, while you're online, please give what you can to our Pass the Hat campaign.  It's our major fundraiser of the year. Luckily, we are getting closer to our goal.  If we reach $13,000, we won't need to spend additional time and resources on more fundraisers. No magazines, candy, cookie dough, etc. Also, if you work for a company that matches donations, please indicate so with your gift.  Don't forget to make your year-end tax deductions before the end of December!
