Band Accepts the Red Watch Band Challenge

On Monday, May 4, more than 85 band members accepted the Undergraduate Student Government's challenge and was Red Watch Band trained - the largest training that has ever been done at Stony Brook. Founded at SBU in March 2009, the Red Watch Band mission is "to provide campus community members with the knowledge, awareness, and skills to prevent student toxic drinking deaths and to promote a student culture of kindness, responsibility, compassion and respect." The band challenged the Orientation Leaders, Tour Guides and Volleyball Team. VIDEO

Band Boat Wins FIRST Place in Roth Regatta

For weeks leading up to May 1, a team of band members, led by Kyle Haberle (Alto Sax section leader) built a boat out of cardboard and duct tape to compete in the 26th Annual Stony Brook Roth Regatta. With the support of band members cheering them on, Katharine Abbot, Charles Eder, Shane Gallimore and Samantha Virgil rowed the "Pirates of the Marching Band" boat to a FIRST place victory. Jaclyn Lattanza, SUNY Chancellor's Award Recipient

Jaclyn Lattanza (Athletic Bands Marketing Coordinator) was one of 14 Stony Brook students to receive the 2015 SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence. The award was created 12 years ago to recognize graduating seniors who have best demonstrated the integration of academic excellence with accomplishments in leadership, athletics, community service, creative and performing arts or career achievement. Jaclyn was accompanied by her parents, Dean Jeff Barnett and Director Emeritus John Leddy at the award ceremony.

Educational Initiative: Improv Workshop with Leddy

On Monday, March 23 Director Emeritus John Leddy held a workshop for the Spirit of Stony Brook Pep Band called The Bottom Line: Developing Techniques to Improve Improvisation and Explore Composition. The workshop allowed many students to practice the art of improvisation and included an activity based off of Count Basie's 1943 song, One O'Clock Jump. The workshop was organized by the two chairs of the Athletic Bands Educational Initiatives Committee, Bryan Szeglin and Robert Brienza. For more information about the workshop, click here. HBO Game of Thrones Peformance

On April 1, the band was the surprise opening act for the pre-screening premiere of Game of Thrones Season 5. The band performed the show's theme song in black attire and gold paper crowns. The event was hosted by the two Stony Brook HBO campus agents and was open to all students. To see a video of the performance, click here.

Stand Up For Community

This year, the band was invited to perform at Stony Brook's National Society of Collegiate Scholars' annual event, "Stand Up for Community." The anti-bullying event promotes diversity and support for all Stony Brook students. A statement on the official NSCS event page said, "Every individual should be able to learn in a school environment free from bullying of any kind. There is no place for bullying on Seawolf territory!"

Ninth Annual Bandquet

On Sunday, May 3, Stony Brook Athletic Bands celebrated its ninth annual Bandquet. Many students were recognized for their contribution to the band, musicianship, leadership, spirit and academic excellence. Section of the year was awarded to the Clarinets and Best Flair was awarded to the Flutes. The guest speakers included Dean Tim Ecklund, Dr. Peter Baigent and Coach Steve Pikiell. 

Two New Awards Added to Bandquet

This year, the Ed Hahne Memorial Award and the John J. and Margaret D. Leddy Sr. Marching Band Endowed Scholarship were presented at the Bandquet for the first time. The Ed Hahne Award was created to honor the life and spirit of Ed Hahne who was a music educator for 41 years. Dan Wood was the recipient of the award and will receive a monetary stipend. The John J. and Margaret D. Leddy Sr. Scholarship was created to honor the parents of Director Emeritus John Leddy and to provide financial assistance to a first-generation college student in the band. Sophomore flute player Pamela Stevens received the award.     

Commencement Fanfare 
Commencement 2015 For the second consecutive year, the band was invited to perform at the main Stony Brook Commencement ceremony in LaValle Stadium. Standing on the stage, trumpet players Chris Blount, Dom DeLisi, Helaina Hurban, Joe Salvatore, Tom Santangelo and Joe Unsworth played Peter Winkler's fanfare to start the ceremony.  Andre Leon then led the drumline and color guard down the field.

LI State Veterans Home Pep Rally

On May 4, the band traveled to the Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook to perform at the Golden Games Pep Rally to show support for the LISVH Olympians. The band played the Star Spangled Banner, the Stony Brook Fight Song, Victory Song, SBU, Let's Go, the Hey Song and America the Beautiful. The annual competition is for teams from all nursing homes in Suffolk County and was held on May 15 at Saint Joseph's College this year.

Sixth Annual Color Guard & Drumline Showcase

On Friday, April 24, the Spirit of Stony Brook hosted its 6th Annual Color Guard & Drumline Showcase on the Staller Steps. Members of both sections worked hard all semester to choreograph and practice their routines, which included flag and rifle work, baton twirling, dancing and cadences. Many Stony Brook students supported the performers and enjoyed the show.  NEWS | PHOTO | VIDEO

Band Members Attend "The Wolfies"
For the first time ever, a small group of band members was invited to attend the Stony Brook Athletic Department's annual awards ceremony called "The Wolfies." Volleyball head coach Coley Pawlikowski and  player Lo Hathaway sent the invitation as a way of thanking the band for its support throughout the year. The group was honored to be in attendance and enjoyed celebrating all of the athletes. 
Women's Lacrosse Team Hosts NCAA D1 2nd Round 
On Sunday, May 10, the band played in the stands of  Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium to support the nationally ranked Stony Brook women's lacrosse team. The No. 6/4 Seawolves hosted No. 11/12 Princeton in the second round of the NCAA Division 1 Women's Lacrosse Championship.  After putting up a tough fight, the Seawolves fell to the Tigers, 8-4, ending the season with a record of 18-2. The team's total of 18 wins represents the most in school history since the program was started in 2003.

2015 Frank Conti '11 Memorial Spring Football Game
On Saturday April 25, the whole band played in the stands at the 2015 Frank Conti '11 Memorial Spring Football Game in LaValle Stadium. The Seawolves were split into two teams: defense wearing black and offense wearing red. In the end, defense defeated offense, 22-17 with a modified scoring system. Admitted Student Day
On April 11, the band performed at Stony Brook University's Admitted Student Day and welcomed many future Seawolves and their guests to campus. The band played the Stony Brook Fight Song, Victory Song and other tunes to get everyone excited for the day. After the performance, Shannon Conley, Quamel Francis, Thomas Krauhlik and Christina Penna spoke to prospective band members at the Activity Fair. PHOTO
