Giving Tuesday Challenge

Join us in donating to our Milwaukee Urban League for the Giving Tuesday challenge!

#GivingTuesday has gained traction since it first began in 2012; more nonprofits and charities join the movement every year. This year, we are participating in the Gesture #GivingTuesday Challenge for the chance to win an extra $1,000 from Gesture for our cause! Each dollar you donate equals one vote for us. The more money you donate, the more votes we get! The organization with the most votes wins a $1,000 donation from Gesture! The organization that comes in second place receives $500, and third place receives $250. When you visit the donation page, you'll see a line saying "Enter the number to buy." These is where you type in the amount of money you would like to donate - i.e. if you want to donate $20, type in "20." That will give us $20 and 20 votes! You can vote from October 29, 2016 through midnight on #GivingTuesday, November 29, 2016. Share the challenge on social media using #GestureChallenge to help us get the word out!

Please note:  All votes are anonymous.  It may take up to a week to charge your credit card. A charge to "Gesture" will appear on your statement.

Health and Wellness Spotlight

As November ushers in the holidays, diabetes is a chronic condition which cannot be ignored. Diabetes is a disease in which blood glucose levels are above normal. Diabetes can cause serious health complications including heart disease, blindness, kidney failure, and lower-extremity amputations.

  • Diabetes kills more Americans than breast cancer and HIV/AIDS combined.
  • 1 out of 11 people have diabetes.
  • The rates of diagnosed diabetes by race/ethnic background are:
  • Being overweight is a risk factor for developing this disease, but other risk factors such as family history, ethnicity and age also play a role.
  • Genetics plays a role in the development of type 1 diabetes, making prevention elusive.
  • Regular physical activity and eating a healthy diet can significantly reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
  • The American Diabetes Association recommends that people should avoid intake of sugar-sweetened beverages to help prevent diabetes. These will raise blood glucose and provide several hundred calories in a single serving! Sugar-sweetened beverages include:
    • regular soda
    • fruit punch
    • fruit drinks
    • energy drinks
    • sports drinks
    • sweet tea
    • other sugary drinks
Talk with family to determine your risk factors. Also, adopt a healthy lifestyle consisting of regular exercise and a healthy diet.
