Health and Wellness Spotlight
As November ushers in the holidays, diabetes is a chronic condition which cannot be ignored. Diabetes is a disease in which blood glucose levels are above normal. Diabetes can cause serious health complications including heart disease, blindness, kidney failure, and lower-extremity amputations.
- The American Diabetes Association recommends that people should avoid intake of sugar-sweetened beverages to help prevent diabetes. These will raise blood glucose and provide several hundred calories in a single serving! Sugar-sweetened beverages include:
- regular soda
- fruit punch
- fruit drinks
- energy drinks
- sports drinks
- sweet tea
- other sugary drinks
Talk with family to determine your risk factors. Also, adopt a healthy lifestyle consisting of regular exercise and a healthy diet.
