10% Campaign
|
The 10% Campaign is a project of the Center For Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS). The campaign encourages you to spend 10% of your existing food dollars to support North Carolina food producers, businesses and communities. Why 10%? In North Carolina, we spend $35 billion on food every year. If we spend 10% of our food dollars on local product, we can infuse over $3.5 billion into the local economy. As avid supporters of the Durham Farmers' Market, you already know the many advantages to shopping locally. So, why join the campaign? It will re-affirm your commitment to shopping locally and it sends a strong message to policy makers about the importance of local foods! For more information visit: www.nc10percent.com |

We've all heard that bees are important, but sometimes it's easy to overlook just how big of a role they play in our lives. Without bees, we wouldn't be able to enjoy many of our favorite fruits and veggies, such as asparagus, broccoli, blueberries, watermelon and so much more. Bees also pollinate our plants, helping our gardens flourish. We could go on and on about our love for bees but we encourage you to chat with the experts tomorrow!
The
Durham County Beekeeper's Association
will be at the Market from 9:30 am-noon.
They'll have an observation hive and share pollinator information with you. Bring your questions and chat with the experts while observing these beautiful creatures!
Also, we're excited to launch our first Durham Farmers' Market tour this Saturday at 9:30 am! Join us for a 20-minute tour of the Market, chat with a farmer, and learn about local agriculture. We'll host informational tours on the first Saturday of every month at 9:30 am so be sure to join us at one during the Main Season!
In addition to the farmers' market this weekend, be sure to swing by Durham Central Park on Saturday afternoon for Durham Refugee Day or visit the huge Spring Art Sale hosted by the Durham Craft Market and Vega Metals. If you're looking for something to do with your kids, swing by Central Park School's Strawberry Festival after you visit the Market. Seriously, Saturday is a packed day full of exciting activities. We look forward to you kicking off your weekend with us at the Market!
Finally, don't forget that we've partnered with Durham Central Park and
Food FWD to offer a
compost drop-off service at the Market.
The cost for subscribers is $15/month and a collection bin and liners are provided. Subscribers will bring their food scraps to the Market or to Durham Central Park each week and drop everything off at the designated cart, which will be located near the dumpster on Roney Street. Food FWD
will do a compost giveaway semi-annually and will be at the Market this weekend to answer questions and register folks for the program. If you prefer to have your own compost pile at home, Food FWD will be selling buckets for purchase.
We hope you'll participate!

Chapel Hill Creamery
O
ur picture is of Allison, our herd manager who lives on the farm and oversees the animal care and milking. Her job includes managing all the groups of cows, from the calves to the milking herd, the pigs, the outdoor staff, and the pastures. We are lucky to have her. She is featured in an exhibit at the Chapel Hill Library called Vitamin O. The exhibit has photographs by Alicia Stemper of interesting people throughout Orange County. Visit soon to see all the photographs.
We have cheese, pork, and our ground beef this week. Our beef is popular because of the great flavor from the grass raised animals and the breed of cow. Get some soon; we don't always have it and it goes fast. We also have spare ribs and sausages from our pigs that are fed the nutritious whey from cheese making. We'll have and ground pork, plus breakfast and Chorizo sausage.
Fresh Dairyland Farmers is a great, unaged cheese to have on hand for quick salads or for melting. Pick up a recipe for our Spinach Salad with Dairyland Farmers and Strawberries. Our Pheta is aged in a salt brine and adds a sharper flavor for green salads, tabouli, or pasta. Our Carolina Moon is similar to a Brie that is aged in the traditional method. It changes over time from firm and young to creamy with a rich, mushroomy flavor. Fresh, seasonal ingredients make for delicious meals. Pick up some cheese or meat to go with the beautiful produce at market and enjoy.

Honeygirl Meadery
Honeygirl Meadery is a small urban meadery in downtown Durham, making an ancient craft beverage for modern days. Mead is essentially wine made from honey, with many different styles that include meads made with fruits, flowers and herbs. Our meads are hand-crafted libations made in small batches, using both local and global true source honey, local fruits, herbs and flowers. They are naturally gluten free.
Our downtown Durham Tasting Room is open on
Saturdays from 1-6 pm and Sundays from 1-5pm.
This week, based on your requests we are sampling our off-dry
Wildwood Mead, an oak-aged mead made with NC dark wildflower honey with bold notes of buckwheat, molasses and sorghum, softened with oak and vanilla accents;
Ginger Mead, a semi-sweet mead made with NC dark wildflower honey, infused with local ginger 3 ways - juiced, dried and fresh-grated; and
Fig Orange Mead, a semi-sweet mead made with fresh figs, roasted and caramelized, fermented with NC wildflower honey and finished with orange blossom honey.
We will also have bottles available of our
Vanilla Mead and
Orange Blossom Mead (both light-bodied, lightly sweet meads made from orange blossom honey - the Vanilla Mead is infused with Madagascar and Tahitian vanilla beans).
