How You Make A Difference

Our Mission is to enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities.  Very often, the quality of life enhanced spreads from our participants to our volunteers.   The perfect example of this is the Vanguard Charter High School Key Club.
With 66 members, the Vanguard Charter High School Key Club has volunteered at many fundraisers, most programs, the office and the thrift store!  They are always an email or phone call away and eager to help.  They have seen firsthand the personal growth in our participants and look forward to their next opportunity to meet their new friends who they've helped learn to ride a bike, or play Miracle League Baseball, or dance the night away at the prom.  It is a comfort to us when a participant's parent gets excited when they see members of the Key Club volunteering because they know their child already has a supportive, familiar friend ready to help and encourage their child in activities they may be new to them.

Key Club members also recognize that programs don't happen without fundraisers.  Members have helped prepare for the Wild West Gala, volunteered at the Warren Miller Films Fundraiser, coordinated a SnowFest Team that raised funds, and helped set up and/or bussed tables at the Community Brunch.
When these high school students volunteer, we know they will arrive on time, ready to work, and are well versed to talk about our programs - because they have seen the importance of our programs to our participants and their families.   Key Club members have been known to recruit siblings and parents to help out too!
Last summer Key Club members volunteered for Adaptive Water Ski.  Some members were caught off guard when they discovered they personally would not be water skiing and wanted to go home.  Yet, they were told by Advisor Robert Kanbara, to be patient and to do their jobs that included interacting with participants as well as, encouraging participants to try something new.  By the end of the day both participants and Key Club members' lives improved.  Some because they were able to water ski and were included in an activity not always available to them and some because they helped make it happen.  By the end of day, new friendships had formed.  And that member that wanted to go home.... Enjoyed making a difference and couldn't wait for the next opportunity to help.
We are grateful for the Key Club's continued support of our programs and participants.  We are honored to give the Key Club the opportunity to make a difference.

A Note from Marci Boucher,
Executive Director

Hello and Happy New Year!

Our 70th Anniversary year was amazing!  Here are just a few highlights:
  • We again served over 6,000 individuals with disabilities in all adaptive recreational programs combined.
  • We were honored to be the recipient of the 2017 Exemplary Program Award for Adaptive Physical Education presented by the State Council on Adaptive Physical Education - a section of the California Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.
  • The Modesto 500 Lions Club hosted the amazing Miss Stanislaus Princess Pageant,
  • And as always, we humbly accepted several proclamations from local cities (and our county) recognizing June as Disability Awareness Month.
Our 71st year will be another amazing year!   Our prom will be a collaborated effort with Renew Church, Shelter Cove and the Tim Tebow Foundation.  We will be able to increase our attendance and provide more people with their "Night to Shine"!   In the planning stages are two new programs that will collaborate with the Modesto Symphony Orchestra, and the Gallo Center for the Arts.  We will of course offer, A daptive Winter Ski, Water Ski, Bowling, Bike Camp, Day on the Farm, Top Soccer and will coordinate the operations for Miracle League Baseball.

We heard the best quote ever this week about our durable medical equipment loan closet.    A gentleman told our staff that because of what he is doing and thanks to us, his wife is able to stay at home!

Have you purchased tickets to the Crab Feed?  Society for disABILITIES has been selected to receive the proceeds from the annual Crab Feed coordinated by Dallas Marsh, Nancy Breshears and Committee.  We are still looking for auction items.  Please contact Carolyn for more information.

Have you heard about our SnowFest?  It's our annual ski-athon which is similar to a jog-a-thon, but on the mountain.  See article above for more inforamtion.

Thank you fr an amazing year!  We could not have done it without you!

Executive Director
