Barbara Misselt is retiring from ECRL
Barbara Misselt, who for nine years led the East Central Regional Library in providing library service to residents around the region, is retiring from her position as Library System Director effective April 1, 2017. The ECRL Board of Directors accepted her decision in November 2016.
The ECRL Board has appointed a five-member hiring committee for the new ECRL Executive Director. The post oversees a six-county consolidated public library system, operating 14 branches and outreach services, served by 80 staff (31 full-time), across east central Minnesota. Review of applications begins January 18, 2017.
Misselt said she will miss "all the people who have become partners and friends," while she looks forward to retirement with "new adventures as well as increased family opportunities."

Meet the 2017 ECRL Board officers

Friends groups share ideas in Cambridge
Friends of the Library groups exist in almost every city where library services are provided.
The Friends of the Cambridge Library hosted Isanti County Friends groups from Braham and Isanti on January 5 to share ideas about promoting library service in their communities.
ECRL provides outreach service through Link sites at the Braham Community Center on Mondays from 12:30-4:30 p.m. and Isanti City Hall on Wednesdays from 12:00-4:00 p.m.

Love your library? Help us tell our legislators in postcard form
If you love your library, then consider telling our legislators why on a special postcard found at your local library.
Library systems including East Central Regional Library have been busy with Minnesota Loves Libraries, a grassroots advocacy campaign that encourages community members to tell their legislators why the library is important to them. Now through the end of January, ECRL and its 14 branch libraries are looking for stories that exemplify service, community connections and individual success
Library users are invited to stop by their local library to fill out a postcard or click here
to use the online form.
Library supporters who attend Legislative Day at the Minnesota Capitol on February 22 will hand deliver these postcards from across the region. Legislators will receive comments from their constituents so they can get a glimpse of library services provided in their district, and to provide an opportunity for them to respond directly to them.

ECRL photo makes MN Reflections calendar

This photo of the old bookmobile in Stanchfield was selected as a cover shot for the MN Reflections 2017 calendar.

In May 1960, a photograph was taken of people standing in line for the East Central Regional Library bookmobile in Stanchfield. More than 50 years later, that image and many more like it live on thanks to a unique project in Minnesota.
ECRL last year announced its first digital collection of historical images in Minnesota Digital Library's Minnesota Reflections, courtesy of the Digital Public Library of America's Public Library Partnerships Project. ECRL's contribution to the Reflections project provides insight into the oldest existing multi-county regional public library system in Minnesota.
The collection (click here) includes images used in ECRL's history book, East Central Regional Library: Fifty Years of Connections, 1959-2009, by Marilyn McGriff.
One photograph, the one showing the ECRL bookmobile line at Stanchfield, was even selected as a cover shot for the Minnesota Digital Library's Minnesota Reflections 2017 calendar. Download your copy

, a lovely book about a small town in Iowa where a woman from Sweden comes for a visit and ends up opening a bookstore and making the local people care about reading. Obviously there are some twists and turns, but it is a wonderful story about small town life and attitudes.

Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon
This soon-to-be feature film is a great young adult novel for fans of books like We Were Liars by E. Lockhart and John Green's The Fault in Our Stars. The story follows Maddy, a teenager who is allergic to everything. This results in her never being able to leave her hospital-like home. She knows no one "in real life," she only has friends through online connections. Then one day a cute boy, Olly, moves in next door. Can the two develop a relationship that will be anything but a disaster?
