It is a pleasure to let you all know that CSD continues to soar with excitement. It is hard to believe that a quarter of the school year has passed. Our dedicated students have been working hard in and out of their classrooms.

Proud to share that two of our soaring eagles made the top 9 for Gallaudet’s Homecoming Laureate!! (no longer called royalty court to respect gender neutrality). Congratulations to Connor Baer and Christina Call, both CSD alumni, Class of 2014. On October 21, CSD alum Connor Baer was crowned as one of the two Laureates at the 2017 Gallaudet University Homecoming

The Early Childhood Education Harvest Festival kicked off with Adam Jarashow signing a story about too many pumpkins. Outside there were many centers for the children to explore. Lots of fun was had by all!

(Off we go to Southern California)

Five of our high school Latinx students, along with four CSD Latinx staff, hit the road to CSD Riverside where they attended the Youth Lidres (Leadership) Camp. From there, they went to Marina del Rey (near Los Angeles) and
joined the Council de Manos national conference where they had the opportunity to network with Deaf Latinx from all over!
The beautiful artwork printed on the T-shirts was done by senior Ana Garcia Rodriguez!

State Special Schools Division Monthly Meeting
|
|
Every month, our State Special Schools’ Director holds his monthly meetings either at the California Department of Education Headquarters or at one of its six sites. CSD had the opportunity to host the October meeting. CSD’s culinary arts students prepared a lunch buffet for the meeting participants. Prior to the lunch, the students shared information about the program, including what they were learning in class. The lunch provided by the students was both delicious and memorable.

What's New in Student Life Cottages 1 & 2?
|
|
This year, we are providing support training for the Adult Transition Program (ATP). Students in the ATP Program have already graduated from CSD. After a full day of training, they return to the cottage to further develop their life skills, such as traveling in the community independently, using AC Transit for going out to the movies or out to dinner, figuring out the routes for BART to go to the mall, or just ordering a pizza via video phone. They also go grocery shopping and help prepare meals in the cottage.

Este año, estamos proporcionando capacitación de apoyo para el programa de transición para adultos (ATP). Los estudiantes del programa ATP ya se han graduado de la CSD. Deaf Services Network meeting at CSD

|
Deaf Services Network (DSN), is a group of members that represent various agencies in the Bay Area that service our Deaf and Hard of Hearing population. The group is comprised of members from agencies such as DCARA, Department of Rehabilitation, DeafPlus (DPAC), community colleges with Deaf programs, Toolworks, mental health agencies (DCCS and FCS) and others. This group has been meeting for over 20 years and meets every two months, usually with a speaker to present on a topic of interest to the group. We share updates and announcements such as job postings, as well as asking for support and advocacy as needed. We also have an email distribution list where we share job postings and new program services. We share our distribution list with other service providers so that we can provide optimal services to our Deaf clients in the Bay Area community.

How Do We Approach Phonology with Our Deaf Readers?

This is a common question, especially in the younger grades when the Common Core State Standards emphasize phonics for word study and decoding. We are often asked how to teach sound-symbol relationships in reading English. The answer is simple—while hearing readers depend on this study of sounds, Deaf readers develop English reading skills by understanding phonology…on the hands! Learning phonology—the units that make up signs and rhythm—
is a natural part of American Sign Language and leads to fluent reading—in English!
